Position: Special Education  Aide II

Instructional Aide II Resource - Special Education

Under the immediate supervision of a certificated teacher, principal, and special education coordinator, assists special education teachers, classroom teachers, and other certificated personnel in the supervision of pupils. Also assists in instructional tasks, which may be performed by a person, not licensed as a classroom teacher in categorical programs; performs related work as required. Not responsible for initial planning or instruction.

Assists certificated teachers and related service providers in providing instruction to students with significant physical, learning, social–emotional, and/or medical and health related needs in preschool inclusion and/or K-6th grade educational settings. Assigned students typically receive 50% or more of the school day supported by special education services through Learning Center or Inclusion programs. This includes students with specific learning disabilities, severe emotional and behavioral challenges, intellectual disability, autism spectrum disorder, orthopedic and other health impairment, and students with impaired vision, hearing, speech and/or other limiting conditions.

Assigned tasks may include, but are not limited to, instruction in appropriate social interactions, self-help skills, pre-academic and academic skills, implementation of behavior intervention plans, data collection, working with students independently or in small groups, supervising students on playgrounds and on field trips, and assisting classroom teachers or other certificated staff.

Associate of Arts degree or two years of college credit (48 units) required. Experience with and knowledge of learning disabilities.

Classroom and school playground environment

Seeing to monitor students during classroom activities; hearing and speaking to exchange information and provide assistance to students; bending at the waist; walking and standing for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate specialized equipment or office equipment. Ability to perform strenuous physical activities including pushing, lifting and transferring students in wheelchairs.
