Join Our Team as a Naturalist Educator at Elings Science and Math Camp!
United Boys & Girls Clubs, Camp Whittier is seeking enthusiastic, hardworking naturalist educators for our Elings Science & Math Camp. If you want to help groups of 5th and 6th-graders connect with nature, gain independence, and have an unforgettable experience, then this is a fantastic opportunity!
Summary:
Location:
Camp Whittier is located in the foothills of the beautiful Santa Ynez Mountains, overlooking Lake Cachuma. We are surrounded by a national forest yet only 20 minutes from downtown Santa Barbara and the beach!
The Program:
Elings Science & Math camp is a 4-day/3-night residential outdoor education program that uses exploration, discussion, hands-on activities, and scientific thinking to help students connect with nature.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Be committed to the Elings Science & Math mission.
Enthusiastically and safely lead curriculum hikes and activities such as Wilderness Survival, Wildlife Ecology, Archery, Fire Ecology, and others.
Participate in campfire programs.
Manage student groups using positive-reinforcement group management techniques.
Respect and engender understanding for the diversity of our staff and students.
Facilitate safe and positive interactions between students.
Embrace a culture of feedback via peer-to-peer observations and team debriefs.
Follow all risk management policies to mitigate camper and staff injury and illness.
Experience, Competencies, and
Education:
Relevant Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education and experience including teaching in formal or non-formal settings.
Ability to implement and model excellent risk management practices and maintain a physically, socially, and emotionally safe environment for students.
Capable of working as part of a collaborative team.
Willingness to be coached and open to feedback.
First Aid and CPR certification or willingness to acquire before staff training.
Cleared background check and drug screening.
Enjoy comfortable on-site housing and delicious meals provided daily while the program is in session.
Season Dates:
September 28, 2026 – May 28, 2027
