Special Education Para educator – Intensive Behavior Intervention (IBI)

To assist a certificated behavior specialist and school administrators with implementation of intensive behavioral intervention with students in a classroom, Center for Therapeutic Education (CTE) program, or other learning environment. Reports to a school site administrator or other certificated administrator. Employment Status:
Full-time, 6 or more hours per day (FLSA Non-exempt). School site or as assigned by Special Education administrator.

Under the direct supervision of a behavior specialist, certificated teacher and/or other certificated personnel, provide in-depth support to students with exceptional needs in one-to-one or small group setting. Assist therapists, specialists and teachers to implement behavioral strategies and program modifications in accordance with a student's Individualized Education Program (IEP); administer special drills to reinforce learning. Provide feedback or data to therapists, specialists and teachers about student performance, progress and behavior;

document student academic performance and behavior progress; maintain a variety of records or files; collect relevant data as directed. Assist teachers and specialists with student supervision; employ approved techniques for responding to students whose behavior may become injurious to themselves or others; reinforce behavior modification techniques as directed by a teacher or specialist. Assist in preparation or development of age/grade appropriate instructional aids and exercises to support behavior intervention and subject matter being taught.

Assist students with medical and personal hygiene functions, including but not limited to, catheterization, feeding, toileting, dressing, washing or suctioning. Maintain the confidentiality of student records and information according to established practices and procedures. Maintain punctual and consistent attendance. Perform related duties as assigned. Participate in staff meetings, Professional Learning Communities, or in-service meetings as directed.

Office and classroom environment with minimal exposure to weather conditions; some outside work with exposure to weather conditions during outdoor activities or field trips. Frequent interruptions and occasional emergency/crisis situations. Exposure to bodily fluids, blood borne pathogens, and infectious diseases. Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone; seeing to read a variety of documents and to monitor students;

dexterity of hands and fingers to operate office equipment or assistive equipment; sitting or standing for extended periods of time, bending or stooping to assist students with learning activities, kneeling, crouching and walking for extended periods of time; reaching overhead, above the shoulders or horizontally to store or retrieve materials. Requires the ability to lift, and/or carry 75 pounds. Probable contact with hostile or abusive students with unpredictable behaviors including, but not limited to, yelling, hitting, kicking, scratching, biting, and eloping.

May be required to assist with loading/unloading of students with severe disabilities onto vans, buses or other forms of transportation.

Working knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Emotional Disturbance and other developmental disabilities; principles of applied behavior analysis and instructional methodologies. Knowledge of core subjects taught in K12 school districts; basic instructional strategies and techniques; general understanding of student learning styles or modalities. Knowledge of basic record-keeping and data collection techniques and protocols. Ability to relate to students individually or in small groups, and to certificated teachers, parents, and specialists;

advanced interpersonal skills and sensitivity to a diverse population of students and parents. Ability to operate a personal computer, tablet or other devices and mass market software programs like MS Office or Google Suite to search, retrieve or record information.
