Position DescriptionThe Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of California Santa Barbara invites applications for a 100% time (40 hr/wk) Academic Coordinator I position for undergraduate instructional laboratory support.
The Academic Coordinator serves in a key role as one of the first points of contact for faculty, staff, teaching assistants, Facilities Management, and Environmental, Health & Safety regarding undergraduate laboratory course issues and concerns.
The department serves over 350 lab sections with ~8,000 undergraduate students each year. Responsibilities of this position will include accurate preparation of reagents, setup of experiments for all levels of undergraduate chemistry teaching labs—including upper‑division biochemistry labs—and monitoring teaching assistant performance. These duties require an understanding of the course materials and course objectives with the ability to implement the safe application of each learning outcome as detailed in the instructional materials.
The Academic Coordinator will work closely with their supervisor but must be capable of performing all duties with a minimum amount of supervision. They will also assist with the general oversight of the instructional laboratories as well as advising and directing Teaching Assistants on various lab techniques, and as needed, other Instructional Lab employees to support our teaching laboratories.
QualificationsBasic qualifications (required at time of application)
- Must be enrolled in a B.A. or B.S. degree program in Chemistry or a related field at time of application.
Additional qualifications (required at time of start)
- B.A. or B.S. required at time of hire date.
Preferred qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in accurate experiment preparation while following established SOPs.
- Demonstrated or potential to provide oversight to a diverse team of student employees.
- Familiar with laboratory safety protocols.
- Experience with biochemistry related lab techniques.
