Transportation Engineering Technician

Position Summary

Assistant Resident Engineering Technician – works under the supervision of the Area Construction Engineer and the Senior Transportation Engineer with direction from the lead Resident Engineer. The role performs various technical field and office tasks of average difficulty related to transportation construction at the Santa Barbara County site.

• Perform technical field and office tasks relating to transportation construction.
• Conduct lab work, night work, field work, earthwork, paving operations and other tasks under varying weather and environmental conditions.
• Participate in site inspections, equipment monitoring, pre‑construction documentation and quality control.
• Maintain safety compliance; hard hat, safety vest or approved safety shirt must be worn at all times in the field.
• Provide consistent in‑office presence; telework is not permitted.
• Coordinate travel and occasional shift changes; may be required to work nights, change of shift, and geographic transfer.
• Ensure proper use of State time, equipment and materials and be accountable for the quality of work.

• Eligible for the Transportation Engineering Technician/Junior Engineering Technician classification per State Examination requirements.
• Valid California driver’s license required for operating a State‑owned or leased vehicle.
• Statement of Qualifications (SOQ) – no more than one page, 12‑point Arial font.
• Letter of Interest – no more than one page; discuss why you would like to work at Caltrans in Construction and how your education, training, experience, and skills qualify you for this position.

• Experience with transportation construction activities, field or office duties under a senior engineer.
