R&D Engineer

University of California, Santa Barbara – Santa Barbara, CA

Responsibilities
  • Perform complete measurements and data analysis on a variety of material samples (thin films and powders) using standard and specialty x‑ray spectrometers.
  • Train, assist, and supervise users of the x‑ray facility in carrying out measurements.
  • Research and develop new scientific x‑ray diffraction instrumentation, including design and construction of x‑ray optical elements and sample stages.
  • Maintain and repair standard and custom‑built x‑ray and optical instruments.
  • Collaborate with researchers to apply advanced x‑ray diffraction analysis in materials research and engineering fields.
Minimum Requirements
  • B.S. degree in one or more physical science or engineering disciplines or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Minimum four years hands‑on experience operating and maintaining x‑ray diffractors or related instrumentation.
  • Solid understanding of theory and application of x‑ray diffraction methods in materials testing.
  • Training and experience in mechanical and electronic design, including use of CAD tools, fabrication, and testing.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Advanced degree in any science or engineering discipline.
  • More than four years experience operating and maintaining x‑ray diffractors or related analytical instrumentation for advanced materials.
  • Experience with Rietveld refinement, high‑resolution thin‑film XRD techniques, and associated software.
  • Proficiency with standard mechanical and electrical design and fabrication tools such as Solid Works and Autodesk Inventor.
  • Customer‑service oriented mentality and experience working in a multi‑user analytical laboratory environment.
