Arthrex is a global medical device company and a leader in new product development and medical education in orthopedics. The Engineer Principal – Product Development will be responsible for full life cycle development of medical devices, including initiation, design, development, execution, and product maintenance. The ideal candidate is a seasoned technical leader with 12 years experience who bridges the gap between high‑level design and clinical execution, steering entire product life cycles and mentoring junior staff.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Design components or functional systems and modify existing designs to improve products and facilitate manufacturing operations.
  • Recommend alterations to development and design to improve quality of products and/or procedures.
  • Determine budgets and timelines for assigned projects.
  • Lead multifunctional new product project teams, through technical feasibility analysis, initiation, planning, execution, and termination, adhering to project timeline and budget.
  • Maintain a design history file for assigned projects, following Arthrex design control procedures.
  • Provide regulatory department with technical support as needed.
  • Support Marketing and Product Management with technical information for training and marketing of assigned products.
  • Support manufacturing by providing processing improvements.
  • Support surgeon and distributor customers by training and educating them on technical aspects of assigned products.
  • Determine necessity of testing and initiate testing of assigned products.
  • Report progress and status of assigned projects on a timely basis.
  • May be required to travel to trade shows and visit established and prospective accounts; international travel may be required.

  • Regularly contributes to the development of new concepts, techniques, and standards; considered an expert in the field within the organization.

Discretion/Latitude
  • Work is performed under general direction; participates in determining objectives, plans schedules, and arranges own activities to accomplish objectives.
  • Work is reviewed upon completion for adequacy; may supervise lower‑level personnel.
Skills
  • Knowledgeable of FDA and ISO guidelines for medical device development.
  • Manufacturing process knowledge preferred.
  • Project management and communication skills training preferred.
  • Knowledge of orthopedic and joint anatomy preferred.
  • Proficiency in designing products using 3D‑CAD programs;
    Pro/E and/or Solid Works experience preferable.
  • Technical knowledge in development methodologies, design, and project implementation.
  • Knowledge of orthopedic surgery principles, theories, and products.
  • Historical perspective on orthopedic surgery principles.
Education & Experience
  • 12 years of experience.
  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in Engineering (Mechanical, Biomedical, Electrical, Software Engineering) or Computer Science required; MS preferred.
Physical Demands
  • Regularly required to talk or hear; frequently sit; use hands and fingers; reach with hands and arms; occasionally lift or move up to 10 pounds.
Vision Requirements
  • Visual acuity necessary to perform job safely and effectively.
Work Environment
