Reporting to the Deputy Athletics Director – External for Intercollegiate Athletics, oversee the maintenance and operations of natural grass fields, synthetic fields, and facilities at Harder Stadium, Clemmenson Field, Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, Campus Diamond, Arnhold Tennis Center and other spaces as assigned for Intercollegiate Athletics. Supervise a unit or group of operational or technical employees; ensure compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and internal controls.
Plan, organize, coordinate, and perform activities supporting department sports facilities, playing fields, exterior landscaping, erosion control, pest management, and exterior fire control projects. Maintain elite hybrid Bermuda grass to meet NCAA, FIFA and other industry standards. Perform field maintenance, equipment operation (mowers, tractors, sweepers), irrigation installation & repair, and chemical application. Provide support to intercollegiate athletic teams and programs; collaborate with coaches and staff;
ensure safety and accountability of department resources (operational, financial, human).
Note:
A portion of time may be spent performing individual tasks related to the unit; supervisory activities must be a primary part of the job.
- Working knowledge of Bermuda grass cultural practices at a professional/division 1 sports level
- Ability and experience maintaining high-quality low-cut natural grass athletic fields
- Experience in NCAA and/or professional sport team athletic field marking and painting
- Working knowledge of reel mowers and associated turfgrass equipment
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in English; active listening, flexibility, critical thinking, multitasking, and time management
- Decision making, troubleshooting, and operations/quality control analysis
- Knowledge/experience with NCAA Division I or professional sport teams in baseball, softball, tennis, soccer, track and field
- Working knowledge of tools/equipment for managing a multi-purpose sports facility including lighting systems
- Knowledge of irrigation systems or central control systems
- Interpersonal and leadership skills to guide personnel
- Ability to identify plants and pests
- Flexibility to work varying hours; excellent time management
- Extensive landscaping knowledge and techniques
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Docs
- QAL (Qualified Applicators License) may be required
- Bloodborne pathogen and sharps disposal training
- Bachelor's Degree in Turfgrass Management or related field and/or equivalent experience/training
- 3-5 years of relevant experience maintaining high-quality natural and synthetic athletic fields year-round; NCAA field marking and painting; infield diamond surfaces
- 1-3 years supervising grounds crews or landscape teams
- 1-3 years working directly with NCAA coaches, athletics operations staff, and game operations
- 1-3 years supervising union represented grounds crews or landscape teams
- Maintain QWEL Qualified Water Efficient Landscape Certifications
- Certified Reclaimed Water Site Supervisor
- Certified Landscape Water Manager
- STMA Member
- Mandated reporting requirements of Child Abuse
- UCSB Campus Security Authority under Clery Act
- Valid driver’s license; driving record compliant with local policies or enrollment in the California Employer Pull Notice Program
- Satisfactory criminal history background check

Job Functions And Percentages Of Time- 45% - Supervises and trains facilities/landscape/groundskeeping staff and student crew; oversee maintenance of turf and landscape at Athletics venues; organize/schedule operations; assist with field maintenance and equipment operation
- 20% - Create/update follow detailed facilities/field maintenance plans and schedules; adapt to weather, projects, and game-day timelines
- 10% - Monitor inventory and communicate needs
- 5% - Vendor coordination and project oversight
- 5% - Coordinate with coaches on facility conditions; incorporate feedback
- 5% - Assist with facility/field budget planning and maintenance
- 5% - Ensure safety, hazardous materials policies, and inventory
- 5% - Other duties including professional development
