NOTE:
This position may be filled as a W/S Plant Mechanic I, II, or III.
This Performs routine technical and skilled work in the maintenance, repair and replacement of machinery and equipment used in water and wastewater treatment plants and pump/lift stations; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
Essential Tasks Mechanic I- Assists in the overhaul of water and/or wastewater treatment machinery and equipment;
- Maintains pump and lift stations, reads meters and gauges, lubricates and performs preventative maintenance;
- Rebuilds pumps and piping systems, installs new equipment;
- Replaces valves and instruments;
- Cleans, services and assists in the overhauls of pumps, motors, and related equipment;
- Ensures that all work is performed in accordance with OSHA and City Safety Standards and Policies.
All of the above, plus:
- Performs regular preventive maintenance inspections such as checking and lubricating bearings and gear boxes, checking and replacing filters, checking packing, temperatures, etc.;
- Troubleshoots and repairs pumping and treatment equipment;
- Dismantles and overhauls water and/or wastewater treatment machinery and equipment;
- Assists in preparing, recording and reporting on plant operation, maintenance, and repair.
All of the above, plus:
- Diagnoses, plans, and directs utility maintenance work;
- Prepares, records, and reports on plant operation, maintenance, and repair;
- Takes on a leadership role in the absence of the Lead Mechanic.
Qualifications of Mechanic I
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Valid North Carolina Driver’s License or valid license from another state
- Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other city departments, employees, and the public.
- Must be able to maintain all information in a confidential manner.
- Must be highly detail oriented and project a professional manner.
- Must be able to climb step and ladders.
All of the above plus:
- Considerable experience doing mechanical work with hand tools and power tools.
- Experience with centrifugal and positive displacement pumps.
- Experience with belt and gear drives.
- Experience with valves and piping.
