Job Summary
The Resident Director (RD) is a full‑time, 12‑month, live‑in position with on‑call responsibilities. The RD works under the general supervision of an Assistant Director and delivers a curricular approach and equity mindset to a residential community ranging from 600 to 1,800 residents.
Responsibilities- Implement a curricular approach in the development and education of the residential community.
- Directly supervise, train, and evaluate 1–2 full‑time Assistants and up to 30 paraprofessional student staff.
- Manage a student conduct and students of concern case load for residents in the community.
- Provide after‑hours crisis response and scheduled on‑call support for the neighborhoods on campus.
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with over 60 R&CL colleagues.
- Support community safety, including on‑call team participation, first responder duties, and special event security.
- Maintain a visible presence and support the daily operations of the community.
- Participate in recruitment and training activities for student and professional staff.
- Collaborate with other campus partners (e.g., Residential Operations, Campus Dining) on a regular basis.
- Assist senior staff in planning and evaluating residential programs and resources.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent experience and training.
- Track record of infusing diversity, equity, and inclusion principles into daily work.
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues across a large, multifunctional department.
- Commitment to creating communities where residents feel a deep sense of belonging.
- Knowledge of or experience working within a residential curriculum campus.
- Master’s degree preferred.
- 2+ years post‑MA degree experience.
- 1–3 years experience in counseling and student advising.
- 1–3 years experience managing day‑to‑day operations of a student housing community.
- 1–3 years previous student staff supervision.
- Live‑in residence with furnished apartment, possibility of contract renewal up to three additional terms.
- May require night and weekend hours as needed.
- UCSB Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act.
- Satisfactory criminal history background check required.
