App Folio is the technology leader powering the future of the real estate industry. Our innovative platform and trusted partnership enable our customers to connect communities, increase operational efficiency, and grow their business.

Who we are looking for:

We are hiring a Full Stack Senior Software Engineer to join our newly formed Mixed Portfolio Foundation team. The team owns the foundational architecture and data models common to multiple property types, providing a strong foundation for our Affordable Housing and Student housing teams. Engineers will identify and advocate for changes that support other teams, set technical direction, and drive best practices for scalability and flexibility.

Responsibilities:
  • Build a deep understanding of our existing mixed portfolio segments, including affordable housing and student housing, to own the foundations of these segments.
  • Maintain our ongoing business segments, including Community Association, Commercial, NYC, and others.
  • Develop scalable, robust, web‑based solutions that solve complex business problems—leveraging existing technology, refactoring, integrating with partners, or starting from scratch when appropriate.
  • Help mentor and guide other software engineers.
  • Implement new features and optimize existing ones to drive maximum performance.
  • Work closely with QA, product owners, and designers, participating in a high‑performing team that values mutual trust and respect.
  • Implement agile practices to break large problems into deliverable units and execute quickly while limiting work in progress.
  • Research, share, and recommend new technologies and trends.
  • Maintain a high bar of engineering excellence, driving code reviews, test‑driven development, and continuous integration.
  • Prioritize quality through thoughtful test coverage and rapid issue resolution.
You know you are a good fit if …
  • 5+ years of experience developing web‑based applications, preferably in a SaaS environment.
  • Extensive experience designing complex data models that meet business and compliance requirements.
  • Proven experience working across all levels of the development stack.
  • Success in driving architectural improvements for scalability, flexibility, or performance.
  • Familiarity with Ruby on Rails, React, MySQL, AWS, and SOA.
  • Strong grasp of Agile software development (Scrum or Kanban).
  • Strong focus on Test‑Driven Development.
  • Creative, proactive problem‑solver who can operate without a detailed roadmap.
  • Passion for learning new technology while leveraging existing solutions when appropriate.
  • Commitment to code maintainability, refactoring, and addressing code‑smells.
  • Enthusiastic contributor to daily stand‑ups that foster team collaboration.
Additional Skills and Knowledge:
  • Comfortable working with remote team members.
  • Pragmatic decision‑making that balances business outcomes with technical goals.
  • Ability to build strong relationships with peers across platform development teams.
Nice to Have:
  • Experience across all levels of the development stack.
  • Familiarity with Ruby on Rails, React, MySQL, AWS, and SOA.
  • Experience with Agile development (Scrum or Kanban).
  • Experience with Test‑Driven Development.
