Position Overview
Johnson & Johnson is hiring for a R&D Electrical Engineer I – Shockwave Medical to join our team located in Santa Clara, CA. The engineer will work on development of innovative medical device products that treat peripheral, coronary, and heart valve disease. They will participate on multiple cross‑functional development teams managing projects from concept through commercialization and will support a variety of engineering development activities with primary focus on mixed‑signal analog and digital circuits, microcontrollers, and FPGAs.
EssentialJob Functions
- Support the development of products in full compliance with the company’s Design Control requirements.
- Support development of technical specifications from specific user requirements.
- Perform schematic capture, PCB layout, and support prototype builds.
- Support hardware designs using best practices including design for test (DFT), design for manufacturability (DFM), and design for assembly (DFA).
- Participate in PCBA design reviews with engineering teams.
- Good understanding of Electrical, Mechanical, Software, and Manufacturing tradeoffs in system architecture.
- Build and test prototype subsystems and/or module proof of concept circuits to test functionality.
- Troubleshoot electronic systems to the component level.
- Support PCA lifecycle efforts including prototyping, verification testing, documentation release to medical device standards, and transfer to production.
- Support the development, execution, and documentation of system test plans and test reports to medical device standards.
- Support cross‑functional teams to ensure all design inputs and product requirements are addressed.
- Support the development of, and improvements to company procedures, policies, and processes.
- Support DFMEA, Hazards Analysis, and Risk Analysis of new or modified systems.
- Support pilot manufacturing as required.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical / Electronic or Computer Engineering.
- Experience using schematic capture and PCB layout tools.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to understand company business needs and support development of products with features, costs, and performance suitable to those needs.
- Knowledgeable in all product design phases from concept to production.
- Experience with C language programming.
- Knowledge of source control and issue tracking tools such as SVN and JIRA.
- Knowledgeable in FPGA design using Verilog or VHDL.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced environment while managing multiple priorities.
- Ability to adapt to changing requirements.
- Experience with medical electrical equipment standards is a plus.
- Experience in catheter‑based cardiovascular devices development is a plus.
- High‑Voltage design experience is a strong plus.
Physical Requirements
- Employee may be required to lift objects up to 25lbs.
- Anticipated base pay range: $73,000 – $117,300.
- Eligible for Company’s consolidated retirement plan (pension) and savings plan (401(k)).
- Eligible to participate in the Company’s long‑term incentive program.
- Vacation – 120hours per calendar year.
- Sick time – 40hours per calendar year (additional hours for Colorado and Washington state residents as noted).
- Holiday pay, including floating holidays – 13days per calendar year.
- Work, Personal and Family Time – up to 40hours per calendar year.
- Parental Leave – 480hours within one year of the birth/adoption/foster care of a child.
- Bereavement Leave – 240hours for an immediate family member, 40hours for an extended family member per calendar year.
- Caregiver Leave – 80hours in a 52‑week rolling period.
- Volunteer Leave – 32hours per calendar year.
- Military Spouse Time‑Off – 80hours per calendar year.
