The Mortgage Lending Officer role is a developing professional role that identifies policy and applies specialty knowledge in monitoring and assessing processes and data. It integrates established disciplinary knowledge within its specialty area with a basic understanding of related industry practices, and requires a good understanding of how the team interacts with others to accomplish the objectives of the area. The role develops working knowledge of industry practices and standards, exchanges information concisely and logically, and is sensitive to audience diversity.

The impact of the job holder is limited to its own team, with direct influence on the business through the quality of the tasks and services provided.

Citi Bank Retail Mortgage provides home lending services via our Citibank branches and centralized service centers. The Home Lending Officer represents the Retail Mortgage business, provides superior service to clients and referral partners, and originates high‑quality residential real‑estate loans. This highly interactive role engages internally with retail branch partners, operations, and community business development officers, driving mortgage sales and client relationships through engagement with clients, real‑estate agents, and other area referrers.

Responsibilities
  • Consult with customers about their financial situation, financial and personal objectives, and lending needs to help them achieve their home‑ownership goals.
  • Collect and analyze information about the customer’s financial situation, personal goals, risk tolerance, future plans, income, assets, debts, cash flow, and credit history.
  • Analyze financial information to make an initial assessment regarding whether the customer and the property qualify for a particular lending solution.
  • Make recommendations to customers about which lending solutions best meet their financial and personal objectives.
  • Advise customers about the consequences, risks, and benefits of alternative lending solutions.
  • Promote Citi’s brand and position Citi as the provider for lending and other financial solutions, including outreach to real‑estate agencies, builders, and other referral sources.
  • Conduct client visits outside of Citi’s offices, with visits varying by clientele, geography, market conditions, and other factors.
  • Collaborate with all internal partners to support and grow our customers.
  • Refer customers who seek financial services other than lending solutions to the appropriate Citi professionals.
  • Partner with Operations to ensure the seamless transfer of the loan application, providing documents to Processors and acquiring any additional information needed for underwriting.
  • Work with Processors/Closers and customers to ensure a timely closing of the customer’s loan.
  • Go outside to key referral relationships (Realtors, CPAs, Builders, etc.) to drive mortgage business into the bank.
  • Introduce clients to segment partners when appropriate (e.g., Bank, Wealth Management, Small Business, Cards).
  • Stay abreast of local market trends, regulatory changes, and expand internal and external networks to better serve clients and industry professionals.
  • Assess risk appropriately when making business decisions, protecting the firm’s reputation and safeguarding Citi’s clients and assets through compliance with applicable laws, rules, regulations, policy, and ethical judgment.
Qualifications
  • 2–5 years of relevant experience.
  • 3+ years of previous mortgage sales experience (required).
  • Residential Mortgage experience (required).
  • Established book of business.
  • Proven product sales capability (required).
  • FHA/VA & conventional loan experience preferred.
  • Ability to comprehend and explain financial calculations and pricing alternatives.
  • Ability to communicate with customers about the proper documents and information needed to obtain a particular loan.
  • Knowledge of laws and regulations governing consumer lending, including fair lending, privacy, and RESPA.
  • Demonstrated customer service skills.
  • Strong relationship development and management skills.
  • Expertise in general lending products and the overall mortgage industry.
