CAIR San Francisco Bay Area is hiring a Policy Coordinator who will be responsible for advocating and promoting policy solutions for issues that impact Muslims and the broader American public.

Responsibilities will include advocating for just and inclusive policies when interacting with both local and federal government agencies. The role requires excellent research and communications skills to understand policy trends and to interface with elected officials, community partners, and various stakeholders effectively.

Location
:
Based in CAIR's Santa Clara office. CAIR staff currently work a hybrid schedule, with a minimum of three days per week in the office and up to two days of remote work. Additional in-person attendance will often be required based on community and outreach needs.

Schedule Type
:
Full-time. Non-exempt. Occasional evenings and weekends required.

Reporting Relationships
:
Reports to the Executive Director.

Key Responsibilities
  • Foster and sustain meaningful relationships with federal, state, and local policymakers and elected officials regarding CAIR's priority issue areas
  • Conduct legislative research and analysis, draft policy briefs and factsheets, and advocate for priority policies
  • Utilize community input on policy priorities by collaborating with CAIR-SFBA's civil rights, immigration, and community organizing teams to collect testimonials and data on incidents of Islamophobia
  • Participate in coalitions, draft letters, and assist in mobilizing the Muslim community around issues relevant to CAIR's policy agenda
  • Assist in creating and implementing equitable, anti-racist, and pro-immigrant policies through legislation and budgetary investments in the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as in other federal, and state jurisdictions
  • Co-lead CAIR-SFBA's election work including, voter registration/engagement, hosting candidate forums and town hall events, and developing voter guides
  • Work collaboratively with grassroots allies and grass-tops leaders to hold public events (protests, vigils, etc.) to raise awareness about various issues
  • Support with strategic external messaging on policy issues in collaboration with communications and other relevant departments
  • Participate in and collaborate with the CAIR-CA Policy Committee, led by the CAIR-CA Legislative and Government Affairs Director

As with all CAIR staff, this role occasionally supports general office needs and organizational priorities.

Required Qualifications
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to present complex information in focused public-policy and advocacy materials and experience with public speaking
  • Two or more years of experience in advocacy, community organizing, politics, or a related field
  • Strong understanding of the inner workings of state legislatures or Congress, committees, government departments and agencies
  • Knowledge of the legislative processes, with an ability to apply that knowledge to coherent strategy development and implementation
  • Proven ability to develop key relationships and identify and leverage collaborative opportunities with a range of stakeholders and diverse communities
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively prioritize multiple projects and objectives, lead projects, and work effectively with others to produce positive results
  • A high degree of self-motivation and creativity
  • Basic computer proficiency including knowledge of MS Office, MS Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat
  • Knowledge of cloud applications such as SharePoint and Office
    365
  • A strong commitment to civil rights and CAIR's mission
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study or equivalent professional experience
  • Experience working with a political action committee and/or a grassroots campaign
  • Experience working with Action Network, New Mode, Capitol Track, or other advocacy and legislative software
  • Experience working in Arab, Muslim, Middle Eastern, and/or South Asian communities
Compensation
  • Compensation in the range of $/hour, commensurate with experience
  • Fully paid Kaiser Health Insurance and Blue Cross PPO Dental Plan for employee and dependents
