About the Position

At Roche, we are developing next-generation sequencing systems to accelerate clinical research, streamline workflows, and broaden access to genomic data. By creating integrated end-to-end solutions, we aim to lower barriers to adoption of DNA sequencing technology.

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow to join our Systems Technology Group. You will play a major role in the research and early development of new technology, devices, and instruments for next-generation DNA sequencing and molecular diagnostic platforms.

Responsibilities
  • Design, fabricate, and assemble custom devices, fixtures, and breadboards using rapid prototyping tools and custom equipment.
  • Develop and implement microfabrication processes, including photolithography, etching, drilling, bonding, and dicing, and use precision metrology instruments to characterize components and evaluate manufacturing methodologies.
  • Create and characterize new materials and bonding methodologies.
  • Test, characterize, and troubleshoot complex fluidic systems and devices; develop and optimize workflows, collect, analyze, and interpret data to advance technical progress.
  • Generate comprehensive test plans, protocols, technical reports, and invention disclosures to document findings and methodology.
  • Select, procure, install, validate, operate, repair, and maintain laboratory/fabrication equipment and custom instrumentation.
Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Bioengineering or a closely related discipline with a thesis focused on solving a molecular biology problem through engineering.
  • Solid understanding of physics, engineering, chemistry, molecular biology, and sequencing fundamentals.
  • Demonstrated experience with advanced microfabrication techniques (lithography, thin-film deposition, wet/dry etching, and thermal fusion bonding processes).
  • Success in porting complex biochemical assays or workflows onto novel fluidic systems and optimizing performance using a systematic approach.
  • Strong publication record, including at least one first-authored peer‑reviewed publication in a top-tier journal.
  • Experience with Python scripting for instrument hardware control.
  • Basic knowledge of market trends and peers’ work in the field.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing and testing microfluidic systems with active components and integrated sensors.
  • Experience building, operating, and troubleshooting fixtures or breadboards with fluidic, pneumatic, thermal, and optical subsystems.
  • Proficiency in operating and interpreting data from analytical instruments such as qPCR, dPCR, Bioanalyzer/Tape Station, Qubit, and Nano Drop.
  • High-level perspective with the ability to see the bigger picture and challenge the status quo.
  • Strong teamwork, problem‑solving, judgment, and decision‑making skills, with attention to detail in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills for interacting with all levels within the organization; hands‑on, self‑directed, organized, and conscientious.
