The Position

Roche is working to make next-generation sequencing simple and accessible enough for routine use. By accelerating clinical research, streamlining workflows, and expanding assay menus, we are broadening access to genomic data and lowering barriers to adoption. From robust sample isolation and preparation tools to novel sequencing technology and advanced bioinformatics, we are developing differentiated, highly integrated end-to-end solutions for next-generation sequencing, resulting in a sample in, result out workflow.

Our Systems Technology Group, a part of Roche Sequencing Solutions, is focused on creating and advancing technologies to significantly enhance DNA sequencing workflows. We are seeking an enthusiastic, team-oriented Research Engineer II to join the effort. As a Research Engineer II, you will tackle a variety of tasks and projects that will help us advance our technology and hardware related to our next-generation DNA sequencing systems.

Your efforts will cover many aspects related to the chemical engineering and process development for instrument prototypes.

Your Role and Responsibilities
  • Developing orthogonal assays to measure system performance
  • Operating various and developing processes for various instruments including custom systems such as breadboards and prototypes
  • Testing, characterizing and optimizing chemical formulations for use in DNA sequencing workflows
  • Collecting data, documenting observations and helping to analyze, interpret and present results
  • Utilizing various types of analytical instrumentation to characterize chemicals, chemical mixtures, and surfaces related to prototype instruments.
  • Generating experimental plans, generating reports and communicating results to a broader audience
  • Collaborating with other scientists
Who You Are

(Required)

  • You have a degree in Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Biomedical Engineering, Bioengineering, or a closely related discipline
  • You have relevant research and early development experience in the life science industry: 1-5 years for a Bachelor's, 0-4 years for a Master's
Core Technical Experience
  • You have experience with molecular biology workflows, including experience working with DNA and proteins
  • You have experience developing assays for fluorescence microscopy and Qubit or other fluorescence spectrometers
  • You have experience with common molecular biology tools and process, such as PCR and gel electrophoresis
  • You have a solid understanding of chemistry and physics fundamentals, including chemistry and laboratory best practices.
  • You have a meticulous mindset
  • You have a positive, friendly, proactive attitude and a passion for science and technology
  • You have a desire to learn and be challenged
Preferred Qualifications
  • You have an advanced degree
  • You have at least 1+ years of industry experience
  • You have experience with DNA sequencing workflows

    You have experience with surface chemistry
  • You have strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts to non-experts and thrive in ambiguous environments
  • You have excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize and manage multiple projects efficiently
