Applied Scientist III, AWS Identity

We are looking for a research scientist who specializes in formal verification, program analysis, constraint solving, and theorem proving. In this role you will work closely with internal teams and customers to understand requirements, build proof‑based tools, create prototypes, and productize solutions into production systems. You will also scale these solutions to meet growing demand.

• Interact with various teams to understand their security and safety requirements.
• Build tools that identify or prove the absence of security/safety problems.
• Implement these tools using SAT, SMT, BDDs, and concepts from programming languages, theorem proving, formal verification, and constraint solving.
• Analyze customer systems with in‑house or externally provided tools.
• Create software prototypes to validate solutions and integrate them into production systems with standard software development methodologies.

• Present and defend company‑wide technical decisions to the internal technical community and represent the company at technical conferences.
• Act as a functional thought leader, successful in selling ideas to executive decision makers.
• Mentor and train the research scientist community on complex technical issues.

You will work on formal methods, automated reasoning, and testing, collaborating with applied scientists to solve challenging problems that provide value to customers. You will publish your work and contribute to AWS Identity services.

The Automated Reasoning in Identity (ARI) team is growing fast. It works on applying automated reasoning techniques to services within AWS's Identity organization, building on successes of projects such as Zelkova and Access Analyzer.

• PhD or Master’s degree and 6+ years of applied research experience.
• Experience programming in Java, C++, Python, or related languages.
• Experience in algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, or high‑performance computing.
• PhD or equivalent research experience, or a Master’s degree with patents or publications at top‑tier peer‑reviewed conferences or journals.

• 5+ years of industry or academic research experience.
• Experience in professional software development.

The base salary range for this position is $ – $ USD annually. The total compensation package includes sign‑on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Amazon also offers comprehensive benefits including health insurance, 401(k) matching, paid time off, and parental leave.
