Own the control-plane services that keep Hyper Plane scalable, healthy, and always available at massive scale. Hyper Plane is looking for a Software Development Manager (SDM III) to grow a team of 14 engineers solving never-solved-before problems as EC2 Networking evolves.

Hyper Plane is a high-throughput, low-latency, multi-tenant zonal Network Function Virtualization (NFV) platform. Networking products that millions of AWS customers rely on run on top of Hyper Plane, including Network Load Balancer (NLB), NAT Gateway (NATGW), Private Link (PL), Gateway Load Balancer (GWLB), and Customer Hosted Endpoints. Our Control Plane Scaling and Placement (S&P) team owns the lifecycle of Hyper Plane resources — balancing load across the Big Mac fleet, tracking hosts, and mitigating disruptions before they reach customers.

As the Software Development Manager (SDM III), you will have a significant voice in the technical and business direction of the service and the team, and you will guide strong engineers through their careers.

• Lead and grow a team of 14 engineers building and operating high-availability control-plane services.
• Set the technical direction for scaling, placement, heat management, and disruption mitigation across the Big Mac fleet.
• Drive the migration to the next generation of attachment management and improve attachment scalability.
• Partner closely with EC2 Networking (EC2N) teams, owning the interaction between the control plane and the services that depend on it.
• Deliver real customer value while raising the bar on operational excellence.

The ideal candidate is passionate about finding the right solution for each challenge, has experience delivering high-quality technical products or services amid shifting priorities, and knows how to prioritize well, communicate clearly, and drive focus and excellence within a team. As EC2 continues to grow and evolve, this area is central to our ability to exceed the expectations of our customers.

A day in the life most comes down to two things: growing your engineers and shaping where the technology goes next. You will meet one-on-one with people on your team, talk through their careers and what they want to work on, and help them think through hard technical decisions. You will sit in on design discussions about how we keep our systems fast and reliable as demand keeps climbing, and you will clear roadblocks so the team can make steady progress on rebuilding core parts of the platform for the next wave of scale.

Because the systems you own sit underneath products that millions of customers use every day, you will also spend real time with the partner teams who build on top of them. You will line up priorities together, work through dependencies, and plan for new use cases and new scale before they arrive.

Some days go beyond the routine. When a rare disruption happens, you will help your team dig into what went wrong, get customers back to healthy quickly, and then put safeguards in place so it does not happen again. And as you settle in, you will help set the longer-term direction for the team — deciding what is worth investing in now versus later, and making the case for the people and resources to get there.
