The City of Santa Clarita is recruiting for a part-time, temporary, seasonal (PTS) Recreation Leader III in the Recreation and Community Services division. Under the leadership of the Community Services Coordinator, this position will assist in the planning and implementation of youth and senior programs at the Canyon Country Community Center (CCCC). The Youth Programs consist of an after-school program, seasonal camps, and a teen program.

These programs provide youth and teens ages 12-17 with a variety of year-round activities, including sports, arts and crafts, field trips, water games, and more.

This position is anticipated to work up to 20 hours per week and must have the ability to work weekday afternoons.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assists in the planning, organization, coordination, and oversight of after school and seasonal camps for youth ages 12-17, including sports, special events, homework assistance, arts and crafts, and other activities
  • Assists and directs up to 25+ staff with daily programming (i.e., set-up/tear-down, preparing activities, etc.) and special events
  • Assists in planning, organization, coordination, and facilitation for senior programming
  • Assists in the training of staff on their daily job duties related to the programs
  • Completes various forms, logs, and reports associated with the program
  • Organizes, prioritizes, and follows up on work assignments
  • Assists in set-up and clean-up of the facility, rentals, and special events
  • Works with staff to effectively provide quality recreation programs
  • Communicates with staff on additional programming occurring during the after-school program
  • Effectively addresses issues and concerns with patrons as they arise
  • Informs patrons and program participants of upcoming registrations, changes in programming, and special events
  • Attends meetings and training sessions as needed
  • Operates City equipment (i.e., bi-fold doors; dividers, scoreboards, etc.) for City programs
  • Communicates with parents about minor behavioral issues, minor first aid, and programming updates
  • Uses registration software to view class enrollment and export rosters
  • Assists in the direction of Youth Employment Services employees and center volunteers in their daily work activities
  • Ensures staff are completing the closing checklist assignments
  • Ensures supplies are available to staff and informs the supervisor when additional supplies are needed
  • Ensures staff are following safety guidelines when supervising youth
  • Reports incidents and accidents to the supervisor, and responds to emergencies as needed
  • Responds to emergencies as needed
  • Other duties as directed
Education and Experience
  • High School graduate or GED equivalent
  • Two years of experience working with youth in an after-school, teen, camps, recreation, education, or other related setting
  • Bilingual in Spanish /English highly desirable
  • Possession of, or ability to obtain within six months of hire, CPR/AED/First Aid certification
Knowledge and Abilities
  • Ability to work with other staff effectively to provide quality recreational programs
  • Ability to lead staff to provide quality recreation programs
  • Ability to follow and enforce City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others
  • Knowledge of computer systems; specifically, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point
  • Ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and positively, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to organize and prioritize a variety of tasks in an effective and timely manner
  • Ability to lead and be a strong team member, and work both independently and as part of a work group
  • Ability to perform general office duties relevant to the program
  • Excellent customer service, including patience and good listening skills
  • Positive attitude in working with youth and seniors
  • Ability to maintain professionalism and exhibit good judgment skills in difficult situations
  • Creative problem-solving as it relates to working with children
  • Ability to lift, drag, and push files and equipment weighing 25 pounds or more
