Job Summary

As the 2nd Mate on our sailing charter, you'll be a key part of the team, assisting the Captain and 1st Mate in ensuring the safe and smooth operation of the vessel.

Your role will balance navigation, guest service, vessel maintenance, and supporting the overall operation of the boat.

Fuel, oil,

Weather:
Sun, fog, rain, hail, storms, thunder and/or lightning, and various temperatures.

Natural DIsasters and or Environmental Risks:
Such as but not limited to: tsunami, swells, and high seas, and cold water hypothermia.

Marine Mammals such as but not limited to:
Whales, sharks, otters, sea lions, seals, birds, and jelly fish.

Other Animals:
Service animals.

Medical Emergencies:
Such as but not limited to:
Fatigue & dehydration, heart attack, fractures, incidents, etc.

Navigational Hazards:
Such as but not limited to:
Running aground, collisions, getting lost at sea, man overboard, and fire or explosions.

Mechanical or Equipment Failures:
Capsize, Sinking.

Job Tasks

Navigation & Safety:

? Assist the Captain and 1st Mate with navigation, ensuring safe operations in compliance with maritime laws and regulations.

? Help conduct safety briefings with the 1st Mate, ensuring guests understand safety protocols and equipment usage.

? Monitor weather conditions and assist with route planning and adjustments as needed or directed.

? Stay alert and ready to respond in case of emergency, supporting the Captain and 1st Mate as necessary.

Guest Service:

? Welcome guests aboard and ensure they are comfortable and well-cared for throughout the voyage.

? Provide engaging and informative commentary on local sights, marine life, and areas of interest.

? Assist guests with their belongings, moving around the boat, and ensuring their needs are met during the trip.

Maintenance & Operations:

? Help maintain the cleanliness and order of the vessel, including guest areas and the galley.

? Participate in routine maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, painting, and equipment checks, when requested by maintenance personnel.

? Assist in anchoring and docking procedures as directed by the Captain.

? Follow opening and closing procedures outlined in the operations binder alongside the 1st Mate.

? Ensure that all areas are properly stored and cleaned at the end of your shift.

Collaboration:

? Work closely with the Captain and 1st Mate to ensure smooth and efficient daily operations.

? Communicate clearly and effectively with the crew, especially during maneuvers or emergency situations.

? Be ready to support the Captain and crew members in their respective roles and tasks.

Hospitality & Service:

? Assist in serving food and beverages to guests, upholding high standards of presentation and service.

? Maintain a professional, friendly demeanor when interacting with guests, ensuring a welcoming and positive atmosphere.

? Respond to guest inquiries and resolve concerns promptly, ensuring a high level of guest satisfaction throughout the journey.

Qualifications:

Training and Experience

? Minimum 2-3 years of experience in a maritime or sailing-related role, preferably in a guest-facing or leadership capacity.

? Valid CPR, AED, and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain prior to employment).

? Familiarity with USCG safety standards and emergency procedures.

? Experience in vessel operations, including anchoring, docking, and basic maintenance.

? Strong customer service background, ideally in hospitality, tourism, or outdoor recreation.

? Ability to swim and work confidently in a marine environment.

? Must be eligible to work in the United States and available for flexible scheduling, including weekends and holidays.

? Sailing certifications (e.g., ASA, US Sailing) are a plus but not required.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

? Knowledge of basic navigation principles, maritime laws, and emergency procedures.

? Knowledge of anchoring, docking, and general sailing practices.

? Knowledge of customer service standards, food and beverage presentation, and guest interaction etiquette.

? Knowledge and Awareness of weather patterns and how they affect sailing conditions.

? Ability of clear and effective verbal communication with guests and crew, especially during safety briefings and maneuvers.

? Ability to collaborate closely with the Captain, 1st Mate, and other crew members.

? Ability of quick thinking and adaptability in response to guest needs or unexpected situations.

? Ability to provide informative and engaging commentary and respond to guest inquiries.
