APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $27.33 per hour.
Benefits Level Eligibility: This position is not eligible for benefits.
Schedule: Part‑time, variable; 20% of time (8 hours per week); days of the week: TBD; shifts may include day, evening, night, swing, and weekends.

JOB DUTIES

90% – Security and Patrol

  • Protect and guard University property, conduct inspections on foot and by vehicle, ensure doors, windows, and locks are secure.
  • Patrol designated areas, radio or phone UCSC Dispatch to report suspicious or criminal activity or life‑threatening circumstances.
  • Secure property and alert law enforcement as needed.
  • Serve as a communication link between campus and University Police.
  • Provide safety and security to the UCSC community by deterring crime.
  • Monitor building alarm systems and notify appropriate authorities when alarms activate.

10% – Administrative and Other Duties

  • Complete all shift logs and answer emails daily.
  • Prepare incident reports for immediate supervisor.
  • Participate in drills and practice sessions for fire, earthquake evacuation, first aid, CPR, AED, and other emergency situations.
  • Maintain familiarity with all posted notices or official communications regarding security issues for assigned areas.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent education/experience.
  • Diplomatic interaction skills with the public in high‑volume contact settings.
  • Understanding and ability to apply knowledge of UCSC Police Department structure.
  • Working knowledge of radio codes and ability to use police radio.
  • Ability to identify life‑threatening or criminal situations and communicate over a two‑way radio.
  • Ability to assess emergency situations and execute appropriate solutions quickly.
  • Skill in resolving problems using available resources.
  • Independent issue resolution within policies and procedures.
  • Clear, concise English writing skills for reports and communications.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Basic First Aid certification.
  • Guard Card certification.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
  • Must pass a criminal history background check.
  • Must pass the employment misconduct disclosure process.
  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license and participate in the DMV pull notice program.
  • Comfortable working long periods at a computer, walking multiple nightly rounds on uneven surfaces, climbing stairs, and working in wilderness/remote areas.
  • Must work all scheduled hours on‑site and be available for variable schedule, including evenings, weekends, and occasional on‑call duties.
  • Required to report crimes, incidents, and disciplinary referrals in accordance with the Clery Act.
  • Must wear a University‑provided uniform.
  • Required to complete University compliance training and vaccination policy as per UC guidelines.
  • Mandated Reporter under CANRA; must report suspected child abuse and sign acknowledgment before employment.
