Description:
The New Mexico Department of Public Safety (DPS) is the State's leading law enforcement agency with a $242 million budget and 1,375+ employees assigned throughout the State. The Administrative Services Division (ASD) is seeking a committed and experienced individual to serve as a General Ledger Accountant/Auditor in the Finance Bureau's Audit & Compliance Section.
Why does the job exist?This position is responsible for the daily deposits for the agency as well as all deposit‑related adjusting journal entries. This position performs various reconciliations (such as fund, GL account and procurement card statements) and creates any associated adjusting journal entries; assists with the annual financial audit, and other duties related to maintaining the agency's General Ledger. This position will ensure that all NMSA and NMAC regulations, and Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) Model Accounting Practices Manual (MAPs) are adhered to.
This position must follow Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) requirements and agency policies/directives.
- Prepare and post daily deposits.
- Run general ledger reports.
- Perform timely fund and account reconciliations.
- Perform monthly checking account reconciliations.
- Monthly reconciliation of the procurement card.
- Creation of adjusting journal entries associated to deposits and various account reconciliations.
- Back‑up for Project Set‑up, budget loading, and billing in the SHARE grants module.
- Run reports from SHARE.
- Assist in annual financial audit preparation.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work is performed for the agency's staff, Department of Finance and Administration, New Mexico State Auditor, and other state/federal agencies.
Ideal CandidateThe Ideal Candidate should possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Strong knowledge of accounting theory and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Knowledge of Government Accounting related to fund accounting and reporting.
- Experience in review of accounting general ledger reports and auditing for accuracy.
- Experience in state government policies and procedures for accounting to include Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) Accounting Policies and Procedures.
- Experience in People Soft SHARE Financial accounting system.
- Strong experience with Microsoft Excel. Experience must pertain to creating formulas, pivot table reporting and sorting/filing data.
Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, Auditing, or Business Administration and two (2) years directly related work experience in accounting, auditing, finance, and/or budgeting. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling six (6) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Employment RequirementsEmployment is subject to a pre‑employment background investigation and fingerprinting in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations; and is conditional pending results. Continued employment is contingent upon remaining felony free, per Section 5.12.1.1 of the Criminal Justice Information Systems Security Policy.
In addition, the selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid driver's license and a current Defensive Driving Certificate from the State of New Mexico; or pass and receive the Defensive Driving Certificate within six (6) months of date of hire.
Working ConditionsWork is performed in a fast‑paced law enforcement office setting with exposure to armed law enforcement personnel and confidential information. Extensive use of desktop/laptop computer with multiple visual/video display terminals (VDT). Extensive use of agency-issued cell phone. Ability to operate multipurpose copier/scanner/fax machines.
Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.
