The Assistant Controller manages non-profit accounting and financial reporting operations and ensures effective accountability and custody of financial assets, overseeing accounting entries, fiscal year end closeout processes, enforcing compliance, implementing internal controls and strict adherence to local, state and federal laws. Supervises direct reports.
Duties & ResponsibilitiesCollaborates effectively with SFCC administration and manages accounting related to restricted and unrestricted funding for non-profit entities including account reconcilement, receivables and payables, intercompany transactions, cash flow analysis, endowment accounting and financial reporting. Motivates, guides, and supervises direct reports while guiding them on the department’s shared vision. Delegates tasks and responsibilities to ensure department goals are met; trains new staff in the department;
provides input into constructive and timely performance evaluations; provides input on discipline and termination of employees in accordance with company policy. Maintains current, comprehensive knowledge and awareness of applicable accounting and financial laws, regulations, principles and practices, maintaining resourceful affiliations, attending meetings, workshops, hearing and training sessions, enhancing organizational effectiveness. Manages financial information system user operations and reporting, facilitating system stability, evaluating internal controls over data and business processes, conducts and administers analysis and testing, partnering with Information Technology to test, upgrade systems and install enhancements.
Oversees production of fiscal year closeout in accordance with financial and governmental accounting standards, preparing and presenting reports for financial statement compilation, auditor attestation, and budget forecasting. Supervises financial operations, analyzing, recommending, and implementing changes in accounting processes and procedures, providing input in SFCC and component unit fiscal management.
- Knowledge of operation and maintenance of complex, computer-based financial management systems.
- Knowledge of federal and state financial regulations, and college financial policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Knowledge of business management principles and practices.
- Knowledge of advanced financial and management accounting principles, methods, and practices.
- Knowledge of college and/or public auditing policies, standards, and procedures.
- Skill in examining and re-engineering existing operations and procedures, and developing and implementing new strategies and procedures.
- Skill in employee development and performance management.
- Ability to supervise and train employees, to include organizing, prioritizing, and scheduling work assignments.
- Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.
- Ability to develop financial plans and reports, manage resources, and handle multiple, complex tasks and deadlines.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast paced, sometimes stressful, large financial operation.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting Seven (7) years’ experience related to the major duties and responsibilities of the position to include 2 years of supervisory experience.
- OR Masters degree in Accounting Five (5) years of experience related to the major duties and responsibilities of the position to include 2 years of supervisory experience.
