General Function:

Develops and implements data-driven comprehensive school counseling & guidance program, reflecting SFPS District and school site mission and goals. Provides academic, career and personal/social guidance and counseling to elementary school students, appropriately integrating the ASCA (American School Counselor Association) National Model. Provides classroom guidance lessons that align with the ASCA National Standards, including wellness topics and issues related to student success and achievement.

Per SFPS policies and procedures, refers students, as needed, to district and community resources in consultation with their parents/guardians.

Education/Training/Experience

(Basic minimum requirements are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the District.)

Minimum:
Master's Degree in Counseling with 15 graduate hours in School Counseling. Current School Counselor License from the New Mexico Public Education Department. Working Knowledge of ASCA National Model.

Preferred:
Previous experience working with the ASCA National Model.

Skills and Abilities:

Ability to exercise effective communication and interpersonal skills with diverse; populations both in-person, on the telephone and on the computer (email, etc.). Must be flexible and have excellent organizational skills. Effective decision-making and problem-solving skills. Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general educational periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations. Ability to effectively use technology to compile and present data, reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals.

Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from community groups, staff and the general public.

Essential Job Functions

All functions are performed in accordance with established policies, procedures, safety and environmental regulations, facility and computer security policies and procedures. Functions are subject to change from time to time to meet the needs of the organization. Current essential functions include the following:

* Implements the elementary school counseling and guidance program. Delivers structured developmental grade-level guidance curriculum that aligns with the ASCA National Standards, in collaboration with teaching staff. Provides data-driven interventions and strategies for student academic, career and personal/social needs.

* Provides academic guidance to elementary school students. Actively supports school goals regarding student achievement and progress toward successful completion of educationa

* Provides career guidance to elementary school students. Develops and implements grade-level career interest/life planning/college awareness activities.

* Provides personal and social support to students and parents. Provides short-term individual counseling, which is non-therapeutic, solution-focused and problem-solving in nature. Facilitates appropriate referrals to community mental health agencies and support services. Develops and conducts groups supporting student skill development, based on topics of assessed need. Maintains a list of current area resources, and networks with agency professionals. Participates in Wellness Team and Crisis/Safety Team.

Supports district and campus procedures for policy enforcement on substance use and violence, by doing follow-up processing; including referrals to Teen Court. Serves on school and community committees addressing the needs of youth.

* Provides system support to District personnel. Assists with problem solving on student needs. May attend parent/teacher conferences. Reviews student cumulative files when needed. Attends relevant IEP, SAT, RTI, 504 meetings. Available for staff training on: student referral process; school counseling program and support services.

* Ethics. Complies with ASCA (American School Counselor Association) Code of Ethics. Upholds and enforces Santa Fe Public Schools Code of Conduct, administrative directives and regulations, school board policies, and local, state and federal regulations. Maintains appropriate confidentiality. Consults with district personnel, including Counseling Coordinator, when necessary. Models and encourages awareness and respect for the cultural diversity of students, families and staff.
