General Function

Plan and implement approved SFPS curriculum for students of all abilities, thereby promoting musical growth and providing appropriate musical activities. Provide instruction in orchestral pedagogy as well as musical concepts, music theory, music history, and performance etiquette.

Education / Training / Experience

Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in music education, or equivalent, with emphasis in orchestral music.

Preferred: Completion of student‑teaching or internship program. At least one year of previous teaching experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Demonstrated general knowledge of curriculum and instruction; demonstrated knowledge of various routine tasks, duties, and procedures and the ability to follow specific instructions with little or no previous experience. Ability to exercise considerable and sound judgment to instruct students and manage their behavior. Willingness to improve competency by periodically participating in professional growth and staying current with latest developments. Ability to deal with various ethnic groups.

Strong organization, communication, and interpersonal skills. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and parents. Skill in oral and written communication. Awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Knowledge of orchestral pedagogy, appropriate literature, rehearsal techniques, and classroom management. Knowledge of administrative duties associated with orchestra program. Ability to differentiate instruction.

Essential Job Functions
  • Participate in appropriate state, regional, and district-sponsored festivals and competitive/performance events.
  • Perform site-based and public performances as an assumed responsibility.
  • Promote an environment conducive to productive performance in music education.
  • Communicate effectively with school principal and music coordinator.
  • Attend monthly music district meetings set by the music coordinator.
  • Meet and instruct students in assigned locations and at designated times.
  • Instruct and plan for the orchestra program at the assigned site(s) during the nine-month contract.
  • Ensure adequate supervision of students.
  • Establish and maintain rapport with students.
  • Motivate students to achieve maximum potential.
  • Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Work collaboratively with staff, families, and community resources to support the success of a diverse student population.
  • Comply with and support school regulations and policies.
  • Model non-discriminatory practices in all activities.
  • Recruit and retain students for participation in the orchestra program.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Salary Range
  • Level 1 License: $55,000+
  • Level 2 License: $65,000+
  • Level 3 License: $75,000+

Musical instruments (strings), stereo equipment, music technology, sheet music, appropriately equipped music facility. Collaboration with colleagues, parents, community resources, and professional organizations.

Physical / Cognitive Requirements

Lifting of heavy musical equipment (e.g., portable acoustic shells, choir risers, music stands, sound systems, chairs). Duties performed in school settings (choir rooms, classrooms, gym, auditorium, recreational areas) and quent walking, standing, lifting up to approx. 40 lbs; occasional lifting of equipment up to approx. 50 lbs. Other limited physical activities may be required. Occasional travel with students on field trips and performances.
