Position Details

Position Title: Educational Assistant

Reports to: Assigned Administrator

Employment Term: Full‑time;
Non‑exempt 10‑Month position

Bargaining Unit: Yes

Salary/Wage Range: $20.59 - $35.67 per hour. New hires are hired up to mid‑range depending on qualifications and experience.

Summary

Responsible for supporting instruction in various content area(s) and age/grade level(s). Supports learning experiences that motivate students and meet their individual needs. Works with teachers to utilize instructional materials that support overall curricular goals. Integrates critical thinking skills and literacy into work with students. Utilizes approved classroom management strategies as needed.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Follow the specific instructional objectives of a learning experience/activity as outlined by the certified teacher.
  • Assist the certified teacher with classroom and behavior management.
  • Provide individual academic/communication support as assigned by the teacher.
  • Provide tutoring services with certain students.
  • Escort students between classes, monitor children during recess, lunch, and other breaks.
  • Provide coverage for a class or individual students in the absence of the certified teacher by following the substitute lesson plan.
  • Support Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) tailored to the unique needs of each student.
  • Review and follow health plans and behavior plans for each student as necessary.
  • Drive students to off‑campus locations for class activities and/or work experiences. Assist on transportation runs.
  • Prepare materials for experiences/activities as assigned by the teacher.
  • Know and support emergency/lockdown procedures.
  • Attend required in‑service training.
  • Support feeding, toileting, and mobility needs for specific students (including physically transferring students in/out of wheelchair).
Position‑Specific Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree preferred and/or earn at least 18 credits relevant to the field within 2 years of hire. Experience working with children is preferred.
Certificates and Licenses
  • Must possess New Mexico Educational Assistant License and Substitute License with the New Mexico Public Education Department or be eligible to obtain one. Maintains current licensure as required by New Mexico regulations.
