An adjunct instructor is appointed on a term contract for instructional, temporary and part‑time assignments. They are not assigned other professional or college service responsibilities and have no right to reappointment. Appointment requires a relevant doctoral or equivalent terminal degree for upper‑division and graduate instruction or a master’s degree for lower‑division courses. Degrees must be from accredited or internationally recognized institutions.
Possible exceptions may be granted by the Provost based on experience or equivalent credentials. Adjunct Faculty may serve as Faculty Senators if they teach during the current semester or within the last fiscal year.
- Provide the most effective instruction possible to meet students’ educational needs and achieve learning objectives.
- Teach assigned courses on campus or off campus, day or evening, following official syllabi and using approved textbooks.
- Meet all classes regularly, on time, for the full duration.
- Establish learning objectives and outcomes for assigned courses.
- Evaluate student performance and assign grades.
- Serve as academic advisor to students as assigned.
- Maintain office hours and arrange appointments with students when necessary.
- Participate in department or division review of courses and programs.
- Upgrade the educational program by evaluating course content, student needs, and instructional methods; make improvement recommendations.
- Assist in preparing course syllabi and engage in curriculum development.
- Evaluate support materials in the library and recommend improvements in the field.
- Keep accurate records of attendance, grades, etc.
- Arrange for covering classes when absent and meet all deadlines for submitting grades or required student information.
- Attend faculty meetings, convocations as appropriate, and graduation exercises.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Master’s degree in a related field or any field plus 18 graduate hours in a related field.
- Two years of related experience.
One year of teaching, preferably in a community college setting.
