An adjunct instructor is appointed on a term contract for instructional, temporary, and part‑time assignments. They are not assigned to other responsibilities such as professional service or college service. They have no right to reappointment. Persons appointed at this rank will vary in minimal academic qualifications but generally shall have a relevant doctoral or equivalent terminal degree to teach at the upper division and graduate level, and a master’s degree for lower division courses.
All degrees shall be from accredited institutions or from internationally reputable and recognized institutions. Exceptions to these requirements may be made by the Provost upon presentation of evidence of a record of experience or other credentials that indicate academic degree equivalence. Adjunct Faculty members can only serve as Faculty Senators if they teach during the current semester or have taught within the last fiscal year.
- Assist with continuous improvement of the Building and Construction Technologies program, including acquisition and maintenance of relevant industry‑recognized credentials.
- Input and maintain data related to Building and Construction Technologies program courses and competency exams.
- Report to the Dean for effective classroom performance, including accurate completion and timely submission of grades.
- Prepare and provide all lecture, laboratory, and clinical instruction according to the required curriculum.
- Follow current course outlines, objectives, and evaluation mechanisms for the program.
- Maintain a lesson plan of daily instructional events.
- Monitor student attendance and retention and document as required by the administration.
- Grade assignments, return graded assignments to students, and assign final grades for all students in a timely manner.
- Provide educational assistance to students during regularly scheduled times (e.g., office hours) or by appointment.
- Advise students as it relates to school policies, satisfactory performance, etc.
- Assist with program development and student recruitment activities.
- Employ strategies as directed by the college to effectively increase student retention as well as student recruitment.
- Comply with, monitor, and maintain all safety procedures and best practices as required in the construction industry.
- Monitor and maintain all equipment and supplies needed for instruction in classroom and field work sites.
- Establish and maintain inventory of materials, tools, and equipment assigned to the automotive program.
- Maintain professional appearance at all times.
- Perform all duties required to maintain a viable program.
- Maintain a comprehensive plan for own self‑evaluation and improvement of instruction.
- Be responsible for service to the College and to the community.
- Meet classes on time and be properly prepared, notify the Dean when ill or unable to meet such classes, and fill out required state and College forms to cover absences.
- Maintain professional conduct and behavior in the classroom and at all times when professionally involved with students.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in Science or a related field.
- Will have or will be willing to obtain appropriate NCCER and OSHA instructor qualifications.
- Two (2) years of supervisory experience in construction or related field. Experience may be substituted for education on a year‑to‑year basis.
- At least two (2) years experience teaching in a post‑secondary or college setting.
- Teaching experience in a community college setting.
- Five (5) or more years of teaching experience.
- Experience in curriculum development, online and technology‑enriched teaching, and student advising.
- Experience in teacher mentoring and a strong record of continuing professional development.
- Experience teaching in a multicultural setting.
