Position: Senior Engineer - Bridge Design (DOT/GO/PINF #10101505)

The New Mexico Department of Transportation’s Bridge Bureau is the definitive authority responsible for managing and performing all activities related to state‑owned bridges in New Mexico, from early planning and study phases through design, construction, inspection, and management for the entire bridge life cycle.

This posting is open for ongoing recruitment and may close at any time. Applicants may be screened more than once. Why does the job exist?

The Bridge Management Section is responsible for performing bridge analysis, maintaining an up‑to‑date bridge inventory, and developing bridge maintenance projects. This position assists the Bridge Management staff with these activities, including developing expertise in bridge load rating and maintaining the State’s Bridge Inventory Database. Other tasks may include preventive maintenance and rehabilitation projects, consultant oversight, supporting District Bridge Engineer requests, and developing emergency repair plans.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have preferred education and/or experience in the following:

  • Bridge engineering experience such as bridge analysis and design, bridge load rating, and bridge management systems.
  • Prior experience with structural software, bridge management software, and electronic drafting Computer‑Aided Drafting/Design (CADD) software.
  • Proficiency with basic computation tools such as Excel and Mathcad.
  • Effective and proficient communication skills, both oral and written.

Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline and three (3) years of engineering experience. Any combination totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be licensed by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.

Employment Requirements
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the state of New Mexico, or must pass and receive a certificate as a condition of continued employment.
  • Employment requires successful completion of a pre‑employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.
  • Business reference check and driver’s license verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in an office setting with extensive computer and phone usage. Field work is required in varying weather conditions—hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, concrete powder, and environmental allergens; moving mechanical parts; high precarious places; toxic fumes or chemicals; high volume traffic; insects and reptiles; loud noises; confined spaces; and stressful situations.

Interaction with the public, local, county, school, and city officials occurs by phone and in person. Field assignments may require travel and extended overnight stays, occasional travel, extended hours, and the potential for extended periods of sitting, standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs is required.
