Posting Details
District Five is one of six districts of the New Mexico Department of Transportation. The boundaries of District Five include the following counties:
Torrance, Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Rio Arriba, Taos, and San Juan. Employees in the District are responsible for providing the Maintenance, Construction, Engineering Support, and Business support measures of the Department to ensure the safety of the public as well as efficient highways.
This job is located in the Santa Fe D/5 Complex Office.
As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date.
This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.
Interviews are anticipated to be conducted within Two (2) weeks of Closing Date.
Why does the job exist?
The purpose of the position is to provide technical & managerial support to the D5/Assistant District Engineer Construction with oversight for federal-aid construction projects managed by the five District Project Offices.
How does it get done?
The Incumbent will directly supervise two (2) or three (3) of the Project Office Project Managers to ensure compliance with project management objectives set forth by the Assistant District Engineer of Construction. These objectives include understanding and participation in Project Development reviews for roadway design plans; through knowledge of Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices procedures; understanding of project management software;
personnel management of staff, equipment, and time; development of leadership skills to ensure a smooth flow of communication and actions between senior management and assigned staff personnel by establishing goals through annual performance evaluations. Critically review all change orders to determine federal participation; complete project inspections as required, and final project inspections as needed.

Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate should possess the following:
- Broad based experience in various civil engineering disciplines to include design
- Traffic engineering and construction experience
- A good understanding of the New Mexico Department of Transportation Project Development Process
- Practical experience developing and/or reviewing construction and Traffic Control Plans
- Extensive knowledge of Construction principles to include plan reading and understanding quantity take-offs; preparation of
monthly project estimates and change order development
- Good verbal and written communication skills
Minimum Qualification
Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline with licensure and five (5) years of engineering experience, one (1) of which must be as a Licensed Professional Engineer. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
Must be certified by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.
Employment Requirements
Employment requires successful completion of post offer pre-employment physical. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required and employment is conditional pending results.
Working Conditions
Work is primarily performed in an office setting. Extensive use of personal computer. Travel throughout the state and occasional out of state travel may be required.
