The New Mexico Department of Transportation's Bridge Bureau is the definitive authority that is responsible for managing/performing activities related to state-owned bridges in New Mexico. This includes all activities from early planning and study phases, through design and construction, and finally, bridge inspection and management for the entire service life of a bridge.

As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to received three (3) days of administrative leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.

Why does the job exist?

The purpose of this position is to assists the Bridge Engineering Manager with designing, preparing and providing bridge and structural plans for various highway projects statewide; and provide support to NMDOT District offices on their bridge and structural needs.

How does it get done?

The primary responsibilities of this position will include:

  • Determining the scope of work for various projects;
  • Determining appropriate costs for bridge work items;
  • Determining when bridge details and plans are complete and ready for review and distribution;
  • Deciding if shop drawings are in conformance with specifications;
  • Determining format for various and multiple drawing details;
  • Reviewing fabricator shop drawings for components of bridges and other structures under construction to verify accuracy and compliance with the contract documents;
  • Performing miscellaneous bridge/structural related tasks as directed by the Design Unit Supervisor and the State Bridge Engineer.

The NMDOT District offices, New Mexico taxpayers, and the traveling public.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will have preferred education and/or experience in the following areas:

  • Bridge engineering experience such as bridge analysis and design, and bridge load rating.
  • Prior experience with structural software, bridge design software and electronic drafting experience with Autdesk Civil 3D.
  • Proficiency with basic computation tools such as Excel and Mathcad.
  • Effective and proficient communication skills including oral and written.

Bachelor of Science Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant engineering discipline and three (3) years of engineering experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling seven (7) years may substitute for the required education and experience. Must be licensed by the NMBLPEPS as a Licensed Professional Engineer in good standing within six (6) months of hire.

Requirements

Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive a Defensive Driving Course certificate as a condition of continued employment.

Employment requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical exam and is conditional pending results.

Business Reference check and Driver's License verification are required, and employment is conditional pending results.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Field work is also required in varying weather conditions-hot or cold, humidity, wind, rain, and snow; exposure to sunlight, dust, concrete powder, and environmental allergens; exposure to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places, toxic fumes/chemicals and/or airborne particles; high volume traffic;

insects and reptiles, loud noises, confined spaces, and stressful situations; interaction with public, local, county, school, and city officials by phone and in person; work is performed in the field, monthly assignments that require travel and extended overnight stays away from post of duty along with extended hours and occasional travel. Sitting/Standing, bending, squatting, climbing, reaching, kneeling, and crawling for extended periods of time may be required.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.

Bargaining Unit Position

This position is not covered by a collective bargaining agreement.
