The New Mexico State Investment Council (NMSIC) is seeking a mission-driven and experienced Senior Accountant to manage the accounting and financial reporting for public funds and government investments. This position requires a CPA designation and extensive knowledge of governmental accounting standards, investment accounting, and the unique responsibilities associated with managing public funds.
The Senior Accountant will oversee financial reporting and compliance for NMSIC’s complex investment portfolios, ensuring accuracy, transparency, and alignment with state statutes, GASB standards, and fiduciary best practices. This individual will play a key role in maintaining the integrity of financial systems that support the council’s investment and operational objectives.
This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and collaborates with investment, legal, operations, and external audit partners.
Responsibilities- Manage the accounting and reporting of public funds and government investments, ensuring compliance with state law and public fund investment policies
- Maintain detailed accounting records and reconciliations for multi-asset class investment portfolios, including fixed income, equities, real assets, and alternative investments
- Interpret and apply GASB, GAAP, and statutory accounting principles to support accurate financial reporting and fund accounting
- Track and report on capital calls, distributions, investment income, unrealized gains/losses, and fair value adjustments
- Ensure compliance with New Mexico statutes governing the investment of public funds
- Collaborate with investment staff to monitor investment flows, cash forecasting, and liquidity planning
- Support the preparation of audited financial statements and coordinate the annual financial audit with external auditors
- Prepare periodic reports for internal stakeholders, oversight bodies, and public distribution, including financial statements, fund performance summaries, and legislative reports
- Monitor and evaluate internal controls related to accounting processes, investment reconciliations, and financial disclosures
- Contribute to budgeting, policy development, and internal process improvement initiatives related to investment accounting and treasury management
- Stay current on public fund investment practices, accounting standards, and regulatory changes impacting government investing
- Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license (required)
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive accounting experience, with 3+ years in governmental accounting and/or investment accounting
- Demonstrated understanding of public fund investing, government investment strategies, and statutory compliance requirements
- Familiarity with fund accounting, investment reconciliation, and performance reporting for institutional portfolios
- Strong knowledge of GASB, GAAP, and related public sector accounting frameworks
