Position:Mortgage Underwriter III
The Mortgage Underwriter III renders a final decision (e.g., approval, disapproval, approval with conditions) for mortgage loan applications in a timely, accurate and compliant manner. This position reviews loan applications based on factors such as capacity, credit history, capital, and collateral in compliance with company policy, contracts, investor guidelines, lending programs and state and federal laws and regulations.
Responsibilities- Render a final underwriting decision (approved, suspend, denied) for mortgage loan applications based on capacity, credit history, capital and collateral.
- Apply underwriting rules from multiple sources to accurately and consistently review individual loan applications and formulate approval conditions as appropriate.
- Review each loan file to verify documents are present, accurate, calculated, compliant and sufficiently complete for an underwriting decision. Review and decide on the appraisal.
- Accurately answer questions from and educate loan officers, loan processors, and other personnel about underwriting rules and how they apply to individual loan applications. Review and answer loan scenario questions from loan officers.
- Perform necessary computer‑based functions for both internal and external IT systems. Conduct online research.
- Meet ongoing short deadlines with regard to underwriting and closing.
- Meet rules, obligations, timelines and deadlines to comply with company policy, contracts, investor guidelines, lending programs and state and federal law and regulation.
- Perform the job in accordance with applicable industry laws and regulations as well as the policies and procedures established by the company.
- Graduation from a 4‑year college or university with a related major, preferred.
- At least 10+ years of underwriting experience or a combination of mortgage processing and underwriting experience.
- Conventional FNMA & FHLMC.
- FHA Direct Endorsement (DE) approved.
- Veterans Administration (VA) Lender Appraisal Processing Program (LAPP/SAR).
- Preference: minimum of two of the following specialty areas:
Portfolio Lending, Construction One Time and/or Two Time Close, or Jumbo Non‑Conforming. - USDA preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of Construction One Time and Two Time Close underwriting preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of Jumbo Non‑Conforming Service Release underwriting.
- Down payment assistance programs preferred but not required.
- Must be proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Must possess excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
- Must possess excellent organization and multi‑tasking skills.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality.
The physical demands of this position require the ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation. Regular walking may be required, along with occasional bending, stooping, kneeling, or climbing. The role may involve lifting or moving items weighing up to 10 pounds.
Vision requirements include close and distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
