Primary Purpose

Under the general supervision of Chief Deputy Treasurer or designee. Performs daily customer service functions pertaining to collection of the tax and miscellaneous payments collected by the cashiering staff at the County Treasurer's Office.

Essential Job Functions
  • Conducts detailed research on property tax information for taxpayer problems, court cases and other research projects; communicates findings to taxpayers and/or prepares reports for department administration.
  • Monitors and verifies source documents in processing tax and miscellaneous payments; responds to tax roll and tax related questions from other County employees or the public both verbally and in writing; calculates interest and penalty charges on delinquent accounts; reviews and verifies entries and information on data processing printouts
  • Maintains files and documents containing taxpayer information; receives, records and accounts for payment transactions relative to property tax from individual taxpayers, mortgage companies, title companies and other miscellaneous sources.
  • Provides support for the various customer service functions within the Treasurer’s Office as directed; acts as liaison for taxpayers in specialty areas as directed by the Treasurer; collects fees and maintains tax receipts for building permits, clerk fees, probate, business license and sheriff fees.
  • Balances and prepares daily cash and check deposits, completes deposits for all cashiers as needed in a backup role, assists other cashiers with deposit preparation and error research, provides bank deposit bags to armored services, and maintains digital archives of tax payment documents.
  • Responsible for reporting overages and shortages of cash drawers to the Treasurer and Deputy Treasurer. Assure that all checks are individually endorsed.
  • Work in tandem with administration to strategize marketing and outreach initiatives. This also includes social media and website posting on behalf of the department.
  • Process Lodgers Tax collection and reporting
  • Add/ remove Tax Liens;
    Liaison to MVD
  • Lead on Monthly Payment Plan creation and processing and monthly reporting, including over/short variances, voids, and production analysis.
  • Trains Tax Cashier new hires and verifies Tax Cashier I’s cash transactions
  • Performs clerical and archiving tasks to support the department as required.
  • Assists administration in scheduling shifts for all Tax Cashier positions to ensure that all payment stations are staffed adequately to account for time off, vacancies or any other emergencies that arise.
  • Assists administration in quality control spot checks of cash drawers.
  • Assists with other cashier balancing.
  • Serves as a float to the back of the office to assist with chat, calls and emails on a scheduled basis.
  • Must complete all training as designated or assigned.
  • Performs other duties as directed or assigned.
Knowledge/ Skills
  • Knowledge of general office procedures and cashiering functions
  • Skill in operating standard office equipment
  • Ability to learn and use the New Mexico Property Tax Code; to use automated and manual information and retrieval system; to perform property deed and title research.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing
  • Ability to interact effectively and professionally with the public, co-workers and supervisors.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Three (3) years’ experience in a financial environment.

Working Conditions

Work is performed primarily in an office environment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly uses standard office equipment and is typically required to use manual dexterity, routine hearing, verbal communication and visual acuity to complete standard tasks, may also be required to stand, walk, and sit, reach with hands or arms. Occasional travel and overtime work may be required.

Ability to lift up to 20 lbs.
