Fatal Analysis Reporting Systems (FARS) Analyst

The New Mexico Department of Transportation seeks a Fatal Analysis Reporting Systems (FARS) Analyst.

Overview

The New Mexico Department of Transportation (NMDOT) Traffic Safety Division exists under state statute to organize, plan, and conduct a statewide program of activities designed to prevent crashes and to reduce the incidence of Driving While Intoxicated (DWI). The Division also partners with a variety of local and state partners in order to meet safety goals based on the Highway Safety Act of 1966.

This act created the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as one of our main partners. The Traffic Safety Division receives federal and state funding and develops a Triennial Highway Safety Plan and sets performance goals to reduce crashes and injuries. This position will work with Traffic Records Section.

As a valued new employee to NMDOT, you may be eligible to receive three (3) days of administrate leave upon your start date. This is applicable to external hires not within the State of New Mexico Government.

Why does the job exist?

The FARS Analyst is primarily responsible for meeting monthly fatality reporting deadlines to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Fatality Analysis Reporting (FARS) will include:

  • Review early notification reports from law enforcement daily and enter initial crash information into Federal Reporting System and State Fatal Log database.
  • Compile information required for the federal Fatal Analysis Reporting System (FARS) case entry to include gathering fatal crash reports and other required case information from other State agencies, local law enforcement offices, and other State FARS analysts.
  • Create and maintain electronic files per requirements outlined by federal audit standards.
  • Update internal FARS tracking database weekly with case information received to allow for up-to-date case status reporting.
  • Complete data entry of an average of eight (8) qualifying fatal crash cases per week into the Federal Reporting System. Ensure sufficient cases are entered each month to meet federally established case count and quality benchmarks.
  • Ensure timely monthly reporting of crashes and fatalities per deadlines established by FARS calendar. This will include on-going tracking of quality control measures through review of the Monitor Report and Use Report in the Federal system.
  • Ensure timely responses to other State requests for fatal crash information.
  • Complete all NHTSA requested Quality Control (QC) reviews in a timely manner, including providing complete and thorough responses to the annual recode processes.
  • Participate in FARS sponsored webinars and out-of-state trainings to ensure understanding of new or revised protocols for data analysis and case entry.
