Summary
The United States Probation and Pretrial Services Office for the District of New Mexico is currently accepting applications for United States Probation Officers in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, or Las Cruces divisional offices. U.S. Probation is a border district with a very diverse, high volume caseload. Selected candidates will be placed as Probation Officers in either the Presentence Investigation Unit, Pretrial Services Unit, or the Post Conviction Unit.

Duties- Pretrial Services: Gather and verify background information concerning persons charged with a federal criminal offense. Conduct interviews with defendant, arresting authorities, U.S. Attorney’s Office, family, and community members. Use law enforcement automated criminal records systems. Perform drug testing and substance abuse assessments. Evaluate information and present a report to a judge prior to the initial hearing with an assessment of flight risk and danger to the community.
Recommend bail or detention. Supervise released defendants, conduct home visits, enforce drug tests, provide behavior modification, and coordinate referrals to community or government agencies. - Presentence Investigations: Conduct investigations and prepare reports for court recommendations on sentencing. Interview defendants, families, law enforcement, attorneys, victims, schools, churches, and civic organizations. Assess background, probability of future criminal behavior, restitution ability, and apply U.S. Sentencing Commission guidelines and case law.
- Post-Conviction: Supervise offenders to maximize adherence to court‑imposed conditions. Develop supervision plans, maintain case records, connect offenders with community resources, and verify employment and lifestyle to assess risk.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
- Must not have reached 37th birthday at the time of appointment.
- Physically capable of moderate to arduous physical exertion; severe health problems may disqualify.
- Mandatory officer safety and firearms training.
- U.S. citizenship or eligible to work in the United States.
- Clearance via NCIC check, background investigation, financial and fingerprint checks.
- No illegal drug use or abuse of alcohol or prescription drugs.
- Ability to travel to divisional offices in New Mexico for periodic assignments.
- Maintain confidentiality, good work ethic, strong interpersonal and communication skills, team player, flexibility.
- Pass medical examination and drug screening; ongoing random screenings and periodic background updates; may require fitness‑for‑duty evaluations.
- Adhere to a Code of Ethics and Conduct.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Two (2) years of specialized experience in probation, pretrial services, parole, criminal investigations, legal research/investigations, or substance/addiction treatment.
Note:
Experience as a police officer, correctional guard, or security officer does not count toward specialized experience unless directly involving criminal investigative experience.
