Salary: $35.37 - $53.05 Hourly ($73,568 - $110,352 Annually). This position is a Pay Band C10.

The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) is one of the executive branch agencies of the State of New Mexico. Our mission is to ensure health equity; we work with our partners to promote health and well-being and improve health outcomes for all people in New Mexico. The Office of School and Adolescent Health is a Public Health Program within the Population and Community Health Bureau (PCHB) of the New Mexico Department of Health.

The Northeast Region works with individuals and communities in 10 counties:
Santa Fe, Rio Arriba, Los Alamos, Taos, San Miguel, Mora, Guadalupe, Colfax, Union, and Harding. This position also works with the Office of School and Adolescent Health, within the Center for Safe and Healthy Communities, to develop statewide resources and support.

Why does the job exist?

The School Health Advocate (SHA) promotes student and community health and wellness through supporting access to quality health care and the delivery of school health services in the Northeast (NE) Region. This includes through developing collaborations between schools, public health offices, the Office of School and Adolescent Health (OSAH), Public Education Department, and other partners such as non-profit entities, healthcare delivery systems, and local, state, federal, and tribal governmental agencies.

The position also provides consultation on complex school health issues, including statutes, regulations, policy, and best practices.

How does it get done?

The SHA promotes student and school community access to quality health care and supports the delivery of school health services delivery in the Northeast Region. This includes through connecting with Department of Health resources to strengthen regional and local infrastructure, with an emphasis on school health. The position coordinates work with the Office of School and Adolescent Health, School Health Officer, Regional Health Officer, other SHA's, and Public Education Department on statewide school health initiatives by assessing, planning, developing and implementing statewide standards, policies, training, and resource materials related to school health.

The SHA works with schools and communities to support the development of school community partner capacity to address critical health issues affecting children and adolescents. The SHA also assists the NE Region with vaccine events and outreach such as back-to-school immunizations.

Students, parents/guardians, and schools (including school nurses and health assistants);
Public Health Office staff;
Office of School and Adolescent Health;
Public Education Department.

Ideal Candidate
  • Experience as a school nurse or working with teens or populations engaged in risky behavior.
  • Experience with inter-agency initiatives and special projects at the community level.
  • Skilled in nursing services for patients with chronic conditions, diseases, illnesses and/or disorders.
  • Experience developing training courses, including course outlines and course objectives.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience in collaborating with and leading healthcare professionals.
Minimum Qualification

Must possess a current license to practice as a Registered Nurse in New Mexico, or eligibility for such licensure in accordance with New Mexico requirements, or eligibility for a temporary license issued for employment at a specific institution in New Mexico and three (3) years of experience as it pertains to the essential duties and responsibilities of the classification.

Employment Requirements
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License.
  • Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certification from the State of New Mexico, or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
  • Successful completion of HIPAA trainings and CLIA trainings.
  • CPR certified.
  • Required to successfully complete blood-borne pathogen training.
Working Conditions

Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. In-state and out-of-state travel may be required. Ability to lift up to 40 pounds.
