Summary

Performs interpreting work and duties for the New Mexico School for the Deaf community in a positive and receptive manner, while helping to advance the school’s mission and vision. The position involves interpreting for a diverse group of people as well as mentoring and being mentored depending on Interpreter skill level and need. Interpreting work is between American Sign Language and English, in a community rich with native ASL users and in settings often influenced by Spanish and other spoken languages.

Settings include, but are not limited to, classroom, sporting events, home visits, school tours, IEP meetings, workshops/trainings, high register conference interpreting, platform events, frozen texts such as vlogs, administrative, governmental, basic health care interpreting, performing arts, vocational settings, board meetings, mental health settings, etc. Placement in such settings is determined by the Coordinator of Interpretation and Translation. Interpreter skill level, certification, and opportunity to grow are all factors in placement determination.

Includes additional duties and office projects that further the department’s mission and vision. Brings training in the interpreting profession to all aspects of employment—maintenance of confidentiality, professional conduct and appearance are requirements of this position. A flexible schedule is necessary to apply for this position. This is a position of trust, privy to professional and personnel information, which must be held in high confidence.

It is anticipated and expected that all functions of this position will be performed in a positive and respectful manner, with a strong focus on advancing the mission and vision of New Mexico School for the Deaf. The duties and competencies listed are comprehensive yet not all inclusive of this position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Possesses the ability to handle individually appropriate interpreting assignments working from ASL-to-English and English-to-ASL. Possesses the ability to work out of one’s comfort zone when required.
  • Demonstrates humility and appreciation for the unique professional opportunity inherent in the position.
  • Contributes to departmental collaborative efforts as an interpreter and mentor, while modeling teaming skills and contributing to professional growth on a personal level.
  • Openness to feedback regarding work and professional skills, with willingness to improve interpreting skills, be mentored, and continually seek professional development opportunities. Ability to self-monitor and willingness to grow professionally are essential.
  • Performs administrative support, including co-drafting and reviewing written materials, coordinating undergraduate internships and contributing to captioning and voice-over recording of recorded ASL texts or promotional videos.
  • Communicates in a positive and effective manner with staff, students, co-workers, parents, and visitors.
  • Willingness to be flexible with work hours and meet the interpreting needs of the community and department, including overnight and out-of-state travel throughout the year.
  • Participates in monthly professional development team meetings with eagerness to learn.
  • Adheres to the NAD-RID Interpreter Code of Professional Conduct.

Experience:

  • NMRLD Provisional, K-12 or Community License required upon hire.
