Primary Service Area: Lovington

Employment Term: 10 Month / Exempt

Salary/Wage Range: ($55,550-$114,123) New hires are offered up to mid‑range, dependent upon qualifications and experience.

Summary

Performs interpreting work and duties for the New Mexico School for the Deaf community in a positive and receptive manner, while helping to advance the school’s mission and vision. The position involves interpreting for a diverse group of people as well as mentoring and being mentored depending on interpreter skill level and need. Interpreting work is between American Sign Language and English, in a community rich with native ASL users and in settings often influenced by Spanish and other spoken languages.

Settings include, but are not limited to, classroom, sporting events, home visits, school tours/visits, IEPs and related meetings, workshops/trainings in a variety of topics, high register conference interpreting, platform events, frozen texts such as vlogs, workshops/trainings in a variety of topics, administrative, governmental, basic health care interpreting, parent and staff meetings, performing arts, vocational settings, board meetings, mental health settings, etc.

Placement in such settings determined by the Coordinator of Interpretation and Translation. Interpreter skill level, certification, and opportunity to grow are all factors in placement determination. Includes additional duties and office projects that further the department’s mission and vision. Brings training in the interpreting profession to all aspects of employment—maintenance of confidentiality, professional conduct and appearance are requirements of this position.

It is anticipated and expected that all functions of this position will be performed in a positive and respectful manner, with a strong focus on advancing the mission and vision of New Mexico School for the Deaf. The duties and competencies listed are comprehensive yet not all inclusive of this position.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Possesses the ability to handle individually appropriate interpreting assignments working from ASL-to-English and English-to-ASL. Possesses the ability to work out of one’s comfort zone when required.
  • Demonstrates humility and appreciation for the unique professional opportunity inherent in the position.
  • Contributes to departmental collaborative efforts as an interpreter and mentor, while modeling team skills and contributing to professional growth on a personal level.
  • Performs administrative support, with involvement in short-term and long-term office projects. Office duties may include but are not limited to: co-drafting and reviewing written materials on behalf of the interpreting department, coordination of short-term undergraduate internships, preparation and editing of community-wide and public correspondence that represent the NMSD Interpreting Department, voice-over and captioning of recorded frozen ASL texts, etc.
  • Communicates in a positive and effective manner with staff, students, co-workers, parents and/or visitors.
  • Willingness to be flexible with work hours and meet the interpreting needs of the community and interpreting department, including travel when necessary.
  • Provides useful feedback to interpreter colleagues, mentees and interns in an effort to improve interpreting skill and culturally sensitive behaviors in these individuals.
