SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIESUnder the general direction of the IAIA Stores Manager, the Museum Store Sales and Merchandising Associate is responsible for day-to-day sales and operations of the Museum Store. The Associate is responsible for delivering excellent customer service, completing daily sales operations, and maintaining the overall appearance of the Museum Store, which includes special exhibitions in the Store’s Lloyd Kiva New Gallery. The Associate supports the mission, vision and core values of the Institute of American Indian Arts and the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts.
ESSENTIALPOSITION FUNCTIONS
- Complete daily opening and closing operations of the Museum Store following appropriate procedures, including but not limited to accurate and timely cash register and daily sales reconciliation, completing daily banking deposits and change orders and rectifying POS issues as needed.
- Perform daily restocking based on the previous day’s sales and observation of the sales floor.
- Assist with the planning, organization and execution of special exhibitions in the Lloyd Kiva New Gallery, which may include but is not limited to painting, vinyl application, and hanging artwork.
- With the approval of the Stores Manager, rotate artwork on the Store walls to give a fresh, new, and exciting appearance.
- Create labels for featured artwork, ensuring that each piece is identified correctly, displays the correct SKU and price, and includes accurate artwork details.
- Responsible for light cleaning and maintenance of the Museum Store, including dusting, sweeping, care of glass cases, garment folding, lightbulb replacement, etc.
- Assist in maintaining two basement stockroom areas, ensuring backstock merchandise is stored safely and accurately according to category.
- Assist with packing and shipping of client purchases.
- Assist in training new Museum Store employees in correct usage of the POS sales and inventory control systems.
- Assist in opening and renewing Museum memberships, ensuring all member information is accurately entered in the POS system and paperwork is given to responsible parties.
- Provide the highest level of customer service to all Museum visitors in a professional, courteous and respectful manner.
- Report any problems, concerns or ideas for improvement immediately to the Museum Store Manager while always being cognizant of proper chain of command.
- Attend Museum staff meetings and other functions as required.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
High school diploma or GED equivalent required, Associates degree or higher preferred. Concentration or background in Fine Arts, Art History, or Studio Arts highly preferred. Must have at least two (2) years of prior retail sales experience. Previous Fine Art or gallery sales experience highly preferred.
Must have open availability, including mornings, evenings, weekends, and/or some holidays. This position is full-time (40 hours per week) and may require overtime during peak times.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE,SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Ability and skill in collaborating with a wide variety of fellows, including but not limited to museum visitors, vendors, artists, donors, fellow staff, faculty and adjuncts, students, etc.
- Adhere to the highest standards of conduct and ethics, which includes confidentiality, integrity, honesty and compliance with management directives.
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, and to engage in proactive problem solving.
- Proven and demonstrated background in retail sales and customer service operations.
- Exceptional cash handling abilities and abilities to process and reconcile sales transactions performed through the POS retail system.
- Ability to safely handle, hang, package/pack and ship various forms of artwork and other merchandise.
- Prior knowledge of art, preferably Native American art, and/or the ability to gain said knowledge.
