The Forest Stewards Guild is a national organization of foresters and allied natural resource professionals dedicated to practicing responsibly and promoting sustainable forest ecosystems. We employ innovative, science‑based solutions to address challenges in forest conservation.
Seeking a full‑time Forestry and Fuels Coordinator to support contractors and implement resilience projects on private and federal lands within the Southwest region.
Responsibilities- Build upon the 2‑3‑2 Cohesive Strategy Partnership and the Rio Chama Collaborative Forest Landscape Restoration Program to promote forest projects for small‑acreage and underserved landowners.
- Coordinate project needs, implement resilient forestry projects, conduct educational outreach, and facilitate contractor training.
- Conduct field surveys, design projects, write forest prescription plans, and provide oversight for implementation.
- Engage and build trust with landowners and contractors through one‑on‑one conversations and deep listening.
- Collaborate with state forestry divisions, federal agencies, and community partners to identify and deliver forest treatments.
- Develop site maps, management plans, and treatment prescriptions using GIS tools.
- Support office‑based project management: cost estimating, budgeting, issuing RFPs, preparing agreements, reporting, and correspondence.
- Perform project layout, tree marking, and inspect completed work.
- Facilitate meetings, trainings, field tours, and capacity‑building activities for local contractors.
- Manage relationships with partners and funders across New Mexico and Colorado, including travel as needed.
- Represent the Guild at conferences and events, delivering presentations and panel discussions.
- Track budgets, metrics, and deliverables, and execute grant writing and reporting to funders.
- Certificate or degree in forestry, ecology, or related natural resource field.
- Three years of professional experience mapping and marking timber or fuels units for treatment.
- Knowledge of dry fire‑adapted forest ecosystems and forestry training.
- Experience with Geographic Information Systems and field‑based applications such as Avenza or Survey
123. - Strong project coordination skills and experience managing multiple contracts.
- Ability to disseminate scientific and project information to the public.
- Proficiency in tracking deliverables, writing reports, and communication skills.
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Bachelor’s degree or five years of relevant work experience.
- FFT2 Fire qualification and Basic Faller (FAL3) chainsaw certification.
- Experience leveraging partnerships to secure resources and funding.
- Proposal writing and budget building experience.
- Proficiency in project budget tracking.
- Forest experience in Southwest ecosystems.
- GIS certificate or professional experience with database creation, analysis, and interactive map development.
- Conversational Spanish.
Starting salary: USD 27.50‑30.75 per hour, with potential growth based on performance. Full‑time, exempt position.
Paid sick leave and 12 paid holidays accrue from day one. Employer‑sponsored health and dental coverage are paid at 80% (40% for spouse/partner/dependents). LocationBased at the Guild’s office in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Other locations in northern New Mexico and southern Colorado may be considered. Travel throughout the region is required; overnight travel may be necessary. Travel costs from the Santa Fe office are covered.
