- Security Officer 2: $18.58 - 29.88/hour.
(New employees are hired up to mid-range depending on qualifications and experience.)
Summary
This position is responsible for overseeing and securing school buildings and the NMSD campus grounds, with security functions carried out both during and after normal school hours. The primary focus is tomaintaina safe school and work environment, while also deterring vandalism, property damage, and unwarranted loitering on school grounds.
The incumbent will alsobe responsible for planning and monitoring both vehicle and foot traffic flow in and around school buildings, ensuring that only authorized personnel are on campusin accordance with established procedures.
All duties are expected to be performed in a positive, professional, and receptive manner that supports and advances the mission and vision of the New Mexico School for the Deaf.
This is a full-time position, working 30 to40 hoursper week, primarily on a weekend schedule (Saturday and Sunday), withadditionalweekday swing shifts (4:00 PM to midnight) as assigned.
It isanticipatedand expected that all functions of this position will be performed in a positive and respectful manner, with a strong focus on advancing the mission and vision of New Mexico School for the Deaf. The duties and competencies listed are comprehensive yet not all inclusive of this position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)
Under the direction of Security Department leadership, the Security Officer ensures the safety and security of personnel, buildings, equipment, and campus grounds. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Patrol and Surveillance
- Routinely patrols assigned areas on foot or in a vehicle.
- Examines doors, windows, and gates to ensure they are secure.
- Monitors security systems including cameras, alarms, and gates.
- Watches for and reports irregularities such as fire hazards, water leaks, or unlocked security doors.
- Sounds alarms in case of fire or unauthorized presence.
- Maintains the orderly flow of automobile traffic in parking lots.
- Assistsinmaintaininga safe and orderly environment across campus grounds.
Emergency Response and Safety
- Assists administrators and staff in crisis and emergency situations.
- Notifies administrative staff, police, fire department, or other appropriate authorities in emergencies.
- Assists with fire drills and emergency building evacuations (e.g., lockdown, shelter-in-place, evacuation).
- Performs periodic checks of boilers andreportsmalfunctions as required.
- Informs and warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or possession of forbidden articles.
Community Support and Interaction
- Provides escort services for students, staff, faculty, visitors, or individuals transporting funds.
- Offers public assistance, including lockout services and general information.
- Demonstrates ethical and professional behavior in interactions with students, staff, parents, and external agencies.
- Protects confidentiality of staff records and sensitive information.
- Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
Administrative Support
- Prepares standardized reports,maintain slogs, and records incidents as required.
- Gathers data, compiles information, and prepares reports.
- Reports maintenance concerns to appropriate personnel.
- Participates inappropriate in-servicetrainingsand workshops.
- Attends and successfully completes all staff development training as required.
- Abides by Security Department guidelines, directives, and post orders.
- Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.
- Assistsin campus snow removal when needed.
Qualifications and Skills
- Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and safety procedures.
- Skilled in the use of building security systems and lock procedures.
- Capable of detecting and reporting safety or security issues.
- Effective communication skills, both oral and written.
- Strong ability to resolve individual complaints and concerns.
