Primary Purpose
Installs, inspects and repairs various signs according to established policies, procedures, blueprints, plans and specifications and in compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
Essential Job Functions- Designs, cuts, lays out and installs signs per the MUTCD guidelines. prepares materials and surfaces for fabrication of signs; prepares locations for installation by cutting or trimming trees as needed.
- Orders, inventories, purchases and maintains inventory of materials and equipment; maintains daily log of work performed.
- Operates fabrication machine, power and hand tools; installs sign poles for new signs; ensures the safe operation of all equipment and tools
- Inspects signs and road markings for proper visibility; applies and maintains existing paving markings, i.e., crosswalks, railroad crossings, and school crossings; and;
- Collects and inputs GPS data of all Santa Fe County traffic related devices to include signs, pavement markings, street lighting, etc.
- Assists other traffic staff in performing field investigations to support traffic analysis, traffic studies, permit review and construction inspections.
- Ensures proper care and follows established safety protocols in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
- Performs other duties as directed or assigned.
- Some knowledge of basic math; of sign design and layout; of the materials and equipment used in the manufacturing of signs, of hazards and safety precautions and practices.
- Ability to use Flexi Sign Making Software, ArcGIS Collector, and Lucity Work order system.
- Ability to communicate verbally and in writing; to follow instructions; to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees and the public; to install, repair and fabricate traffic signs; to read and interpret maps with sign designations; and to operate hydraulic post drivers, hydraulic anchor pullers, generators, hammer drills, power drills, power impact drills, grinders, wrenches, hammers, sledgehammers, shovels, fence post drivers, levels, forklifts, paint stripping machines, propane torches and various power and manual tools and equipment.
- High school diploma or equivalent plus any combination of formal training or experience in construction or a related technical field totaling one (1) year.
- Obtain and maintain ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor Certification within six (6) months of date of hire.
- Obtain and maintain IMSA Work Zone Traffic Control Technician and Signs and Markings Level I certification within one (1) year of date of hire.
- Must possess and maintain OSHA and First Aid, CPR and AED certifications or obtain within six (6) months of hire (training provided by Santa Fe County).
- Must possess a valid New Mexico Class D driver’s license. Incumbent may be appointed to drive a Santa Fe County vehicle while conducting County business.
Work is performed in both a shop setting and outdoors with exposure to dust, fumes, airborne particles, allergens, chemicals, electrical energy and extreme heat or cold. Work involves high risk and potentially dangerous situations working near hazardous/moving materials, equipment and machinery; exposure to excessive noise; and working with hostile and/or offensive individuals. The use of protective clothing, equipment, devices and materials is required.
Work requires the ability to stand, walk, sit, reach with hands or arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk, hear, and smell; clarity of vision at short and long distance; and the ability to lift up to 100lbs. Work schedule may include evening and weekend hours. Position will be subject to random drug screening, per DOT regulation.
