Position: Transportation Coordinator – Open until 3/2/26

Under the general direction of the Senior Services Administrative Program Manager, plans, organizes, and manages the daily responsibilities of the Santa Fe County Senior Services Section transportation program.

  • Trains, assigns work to, and evaluates staff; recommends the hiring of new employees, the promotion and salary increases of staff, and disciplinary action for employees; and assists in the resolution of grievances and complaints.
  • Oversees the daily operations of the transportation program; drafts and implements policies and procedures relative to transportation and meal delivery; and assists in the budget preparation process.
  • Ensures training on and compliance with departmental policies and standards, safety standards in compliance with OSHA guidelines, EID guidelines, and Area Agency on Aging (AAA) guidelines.
  • Coordinates with department personnel to address vehicle needs and issues; schedules vehicles for maintenance; and transports vehicles between senior centers and fleet office.
  • Develops and updates transportation and meal delivery routes; incorporates new clients into transportation and meal delivery route.
  • Assists drivers in completing routes and fills in for absent drivers; assist cook in preparing and serving meals; assists as needed in senior centers.
  • Supervises transportation and ‘meals on wheels’ delivery program to ensure drivers are properly trained regarding food safety handling and packaging, maintain proper temperatures, delivery protocols, etc.
Knowledge/Skills
  • Knowledge of DOT motor carrier rules and regulations and of state, county, and AAA programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Knowledge of fleet management and route development.
  • Knowledge of how Alzheimer’s and dementia affects the daily behavior of seniors and knowledge of basic safety procedures and practices.
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures and standard office equipment.
  • Ability to manage and supervise staff; to organize schedules; to plan and implement programs; to work independently; and to solve practical problems.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, individually and in formal settings to large groups; to understand and follow verbal and written instructions; and to communicate effectively and patiently with senior citizens, the public, and co-workers.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with controversial matters and to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to operate effectively under stringent deadlines.
  • Skilled in customer service.
  • Skilled in operating various word-processing, spreadsheets, database and other software programs in a Windows environment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; and
  • Four (4) years of experience in customer service, business administration, community or social services, gerontology, or a related field, with two (2) years of supervisory experience. A completed New Mexico EDGE Public Supervisor certification will be accepted as a substitution for the two (2) years of required supervisory experience.
  • Related education and experience may be substituted at a rate of thirty (30) semester hours equal to one (1) year experience.
  • Must become certified in First Aid and CPR within three (3) months of hire.
  • Must complete a Defensive Driving class within thirty (30) days of hire.
  • Must have or be able to obtain a current Food Handler’s certification. Failure to receive this certification may result in termination of employment.
Working Conditions

Work is performed indoors and outdoors, in varied weather conditions. May be required to work irregular and extended hours or be on-call. Work schedule may include weekend, evening, and holiday hours. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand, walk, and sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands or arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl;

climb or balance; taste or smell; and talk or hear. Clarity of vision at short and long distance is required. May be required to lift up to 50 pounds. May be exposed to dust, fumes, airborne particles, or allergens; to excessive noise; to working near hazardous or moving equipment or machinery; and to hostile, violent, or offensive individuals on a regular basis.

Will be required to use protective clothing, equipment, devices, or materials. May be subject to exposure to CRTs and VDTs.

Conditions of Employment

Selected candidate must submit to and pass a County paid pre-employment physical and drug/alcohol screening. Additionally, selected candidate must submit to and pass a county paid criminal background screening. Selected candidate must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Class D Driver’s License as incumbent shall be appointed to drive a County vehicle during the performance of his/her duties.
