Minimum Qualifications

  • Must possess a valid commercial driver’s license to operate a school bus
  • Must possess basic first aid and CPR certification
  • Must possess an excellent driving record and driving skills in compliance with division standards
  • Must possess a good knowledge of procedures and federal/state laws governing the safe operation of a school bus prior
  • Must possess knowledge of, or the ability to accurately and quickly learn, local street and road systems.
  • Must possess knowledge of, or the ability to accurately and quickly learn, how to properly secure a wheelchair, car seat, and other restraining devices on a school bus.
  • Must possess the ability to maintain student discipline and ensure that student behavior is not a distraction to safe driving.
  • Must possess the ability to recognize and report any unsafe act or condition.
  • Must remain in compliance with state/division regulations regarding the use of controlled substances and alcohol as applied to school bus drivers.
  • Must meet the mandated physical and mental requirements established by the state and the US Department of Transportation

Job Responsibilities of Bus Driver
  • Works cooperatively with colleagues, supervisors, and administrators.
  • Demonstrates ethical behavior.
  • Follows district policies and administrative rules and regulations.
  • Follows District Code of Conduct policies.
  • Maintains behavior appropriate to performing and accomplishing assigned duties.
  • Maintains a suitable personal appearance as it relates to position.
  • Drives a school transportation vehicle within a prescribe route(s) in accordance with time schedules; picking up and discharging students at designated stops
  • Obeys all traffic laws and transportation practices as outlined in the CDL manual, School Board Policy and local ordinances
  • Observes all mandatory safety regulations for school buses and keeps all emergency exits clear of obstructions.
  • May operate a special ramp bus; loads and unloads students in wheelchairs on and off bus, inspecting wheelchair for operational safety; operates ramp; positions and secures wheelchair in bus
  • Transports students and teacher on field trips to various locations; planning necessary route(s) and stops as needed
  • Exercises responsible leadership and appropriate behavior when on out-of-division school trips.
  • Maintains order and proper discipline of student passengers according to district policy
  • Reports undisciplined students to the proper authority and compiles written reports as requested in accordance with district policy
  • Conduct safety and operational inspection of assigned vehicle daily
  • Returns the bus to the assigned bus lot, performs a final inspection, and secures the bus according to procedures.
  • Reports needed mechanical repairs when necessary
  • Services buses with gas, diesel fuel, and oil; checks and when necessary fills tires and batteries
  • Performs periodical safety drills as required by law; completing necessary reports upon request
  • Maintains cleanliness of vehicle to ensure safe operating condition
  • Completes periodic mileage and other reports including passenger counts
  • Attends various meetings regarding safety, first aid and training updates as required
  • Participates in all required training.
  • Maintains a commercial driver’s license as required by the State Department of Transportation and maintains Red Cross First Aid/CPR certification.
  • Attends driver training programs to maintain current knowledge of the operation of vehicles in the transportation of school children
  • Operates a two-way radio
  • Washes bus as needed
  • Other duties as assigned.
