We are looking for a detail‑oriented Quality Control Laboratory Supervisor to oversee lab operations and ensure our materials meet the highest industry standards. The ideal candidate will have ample experience with aggregate and asphalt production and at minimum a general understanding of ready‑mix operations as they pertain to quality control.

The Quality Control Laboratory Supervisor will report directly to the Quality Control Manager and lead a team of technicians performing field and laboratory testing. The Lab Supervisor will be the primary point of contact for all lab operations, acting as the liaison between the laboratory and management. The Lab Supervisor will work closely with the Quality Control Manager to streamline workflows, implement new industry standards and ensure the laboratory remains compliant with state and federal accreditations.

Compensation

$80,000 - $100,000 DOE

Responsibilities
  • Delegate daily testing schedules/tasks to lab technicians
  • Review daily test results/reports for accuracy and conformance to specifications; flagging and troubleshooting any deviations
  • Take the lead in maintaining documentation for compliance with laboratory accreditations (Caltrans, AASHTO, AMRL and CCRL)
  • Ensure proper maintenance, calibration and records for laboratory equipment
  • Identify material trends or production issues for optimizing plant outputs and maintaining material quality; communicating with plant operations when adjustments are necessary
  • Provide technical assistance in solving field problems
  • Assist in audit preparation; maintain and collect required documentation/records for review with Manager prior to laboratory visits
  • Participate in pre‑job bidding preparation
  • Maintain a continuing program for technician training/recertification and personnel self‑improvement/development
  • Interact with Federal, State and local agencies on products supplied by Cal Portland
  • Monitor laboratory supplies inventory and equipment health, reporting necessary items to the Manager for purchase or repair
  • Assist in the development and approval of new Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) designs
  • Coordinate with regional management personnel (sales, operations, customer service, dispatch)
  • When required, perform field testing and site visits to monitor material performance
  • Maintain a clean, safe and organized laboratory environment, enforcing all PPE & safety protocols
  • Work directly with customers; assist with customer complaints
  • Enter data and generate test reports for review by Quality Control Manager prior to distribution
Education

Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Chemistry/Chemical Engineering or a minimum of 5‑years of experience in related construction material testing.

Requirements/Qualifications
  • 2 years in a supervisory or lead technician role (preferred)
  • Strong math and analytical skills with a high attention to detail
  • Hold current Caltrans HMA I/II and ACI Field & Concrete Strengths Technician certifications or ability to acquire within 6 months of employment.
  • Working knowledge and understanding of Caltrans, AASHTO & ASTM test methods
  • Strong critical thinking skills; ability to adapt to ever‑changing job conditions and problems
  • Meticulous data entry and record keeping, both digitally and physically
  • Strong communication skills: ability to motivate and influence others
  • Physically able to: climb, bend, squat, lift, stretch, drive, twist and ride on rough terrain
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs.
  • Must have a valid Driver’s License and clean DMV record
  • Occasional irregular hours: nights and weekends may be required
Conditions of Employment

Successful candidate must submit to a post‑offer pre‑employment physical examination, drug/alcohol screen, and background check. Some positions require FMCSA‑regulated ongoing drug and alcohol testing.
