Job Overview

A law firm seeks a Science Advisor/Patent Agent to join their Life Sciences Business Unit in Santa Monica, CA. This role offers an opportunity to apply scientific expertise in a legal setting, focusing on intellectual property transactions and strategies.

• Draft patent applications, including detailed specifications and claims.
• Perform prior art searches and freedom-to-operate analyses.
• Evaluate patentability, validity, and infringement risks of scientific inventions.
• Support IP due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, and licensing transactions.
• Conduct IP landscape and competitive intelligence analyses.
• Advise on patent portfolio development and management.
• Manage clients' patent portfolios and prepare responses to office actions.
• Collaborate with attorneys and clients to align IP strategies with business goals.

Strong academic credentials with excellent technical writing and communication skills.

Familiarity with U.S. and international patent law, especially in life sciences and biotech.

Eligibility to sit for the USPTO registration examination if not already registered.

• Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biomechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.

Admission to practice before the USPTO is strongly preferred.

Proactive and detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple projects.

Experience in patent preparation and prosecution is preferred.
