Summary
We are seeking an experienced d esigner to help s hape quests, events, and repeatable activities within our early stage open-world video game. In this role, you will own gameplay content end to end, from concept and paper design through in-editor implementation, encounter setup, tuning, and polish. You will build experiences that support player freedom, reward exploration, and align with a grounded, satirical world tone.
Core Responsibilities
- Own end-to-end quest and open world content, from initial pitch and prototype through implementation, tuning, and final polish.
- Design missions, events, and repeatable activities with clear gameplay goals that support exploration, player agency, and the established world tone.
- Implement and maintain quest logic using visual scripting and existing content systems, supporting open-ended sandbox play.
- Prototype custom mechanics for mission beats.
- Create modular quest templates and examples to enable effici ent, consistent content creation across the team.
- Greybox interior and exterior spaces, sculpt landscapes, and place gameplay props to support traversal, readability, and encounter flow.
- Design and tune AI patrols, crowds, companions, and mixed encounters that encourage player improvisation.
- Collaborate closely with Narrative, Systems Design, Engineering, Audio, Animation, Production, and outsource partners to deliver high-quality content on schedule.
- Shipped at least 2 titles on console and/or PC in a mission design, quest design, or similar role.
- Strong visual scripting ability for quest logic and mechanic prototyping.
- Strong spatial design skills across traversal, stealth, and combat encounters.
- Clear writing and communication.
- Strong instincts for tone and humor in a grounded, satirical world.
- Comfort owning work through iteration, feedback, and ship readiness.
- Unreal Engine 5 experience, including Blueprint scripting.
- Open world design experience.
- Strong NPC design instincts in a dense world, integrating crowds and combat.
- A track record of building reusable patterns and templates.
- Experience working with outsource or co-dev partners.
- Familiarity with mission state machines, smart objects, and State Tree AI.
- A portfolio of quests, design docs, or prototypes.

- Office is located near downtown San Rafael- near freeway and bus and train stations.
The base pay range for this position is $110,000 to $150,000 per year. Actual compensation is based on market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. We also offer a competitive package of benefits including vacation time, sick time, company holidays, parental leave, medical/dental/vision insurance, life insurance, disability insurance, and 401(k) matching to regular full-time employees. Certain roles may also be eligible for bonus and equity.
