Responsibilities

We are seeking a dynamic scholar, educator, and communicator for a 12-month Assistant/Associate Professor position that will be 60% teaching (College of Agricultural and Life Sciences) and 40% research (Florida Agricultural Experiment Station). The assignment may change with the needs of WFREC and WEC.

The faculty member will teach a dynamic on-ongoing natural resource conservation program  successful candidate will deliver 3-4 courses annually, including Wetland Wildlife Ecology, Wildlife of Florida, and Wildlife of Florida Lab. Additional courses may include Wildlife Habitat Management, Wildlife Techniques, or other courses depending on experience and interests. The faculty member will support undergraduate and graduate education, chair and serve on graduate student committees, supervise thesis and dissertation research, supervise undergraduate research, and publish with graduate students.

Faculty are encouraged to support and participate in the CALS Honors Program, distance education, and international education.

The faculty member will conduct applied research on conservation and management of coastal systems, including wetlands. The selected applicant is expected to develop a recognized, externally-funded research program in coastal related issues that serve Florida stakeholders. Priority research areas include conservation and management of wetland/coastal wildlife species and habitats, coastal and wetland restoration, global change effects on coastal and wetland structure and function, ecosystem services of coastal ecosystems, and international conservation of wetland species.

Candidates should be able to participate in interdisciplinary collaboration.

All faculty are expected to be supportive of UF’s research, teaching, and extension mission areas, irrespective of the assignment split specified in the position description.

Contextual Information

This position is part of an off-campus teaching program established at the WFREC and is a collaborative effort between the University of Florida, Pensacola State College (PSC), and the University of West Florida. The program is located at the PSC Milton campus approximately 20 miles northeast of Pensacola, FL. A 640-acre research and demonstration farm is located about 12 miles north of Milton in Jay, FL.

Coastal ecosystems including wetlands are important ecosystems globally and particularly important in Florida. With 12,000 square miles of freshwater surface area, 7,800 lakes, and numerous wetlands, research opportunities on coastal and wetland habitats with emphasis on focal taxa are vast.

Qualifications

A doctorate (foreign equivalent acceptable) in Wildlife Ecology or a closely related discipline is required. Candidates should have a strong teaching and research background, constructive professional relationships, the ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with scientific, stakeholder, and student audiences, and the ability to procure extramural funding. Candidates must be supportive of the UF Land-Grant mission and committed to UF core values.

Preferred:
Postdoctoral experience is desirable.
