Description

Under the direction of the school principal and/or assistant principal, the Secondary World Languages Teacher plans and provides appropriate learning experiences for all students. The teacher creates an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional development of students and ensures success for every learner.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education:

    Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of education from an accredited institution.
  • Certification/Licensure:
    Meets the Maryland State Department of Education licensure requirements for Secondary World Languages.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Three or more years of teaching experience.
  • Current Maryland State Department of Education license for Secondary World Languages.
Essential Position Responsibilities
  • Plan and implement instructional programs that meet system-wide goals and the needs of all students.
  • Prepare and document lesson plans in accordance with HCPSS curricula to achieve instructional objectives.
  • Create an instructional environment that supports student engagement and academic success.
  • Develop differentiated instructional plans for students with disabilities and refer them to appropriate specialized support.
  • Use instructional methods, resources, and evaluation techniques that motivate each student.
  • Provide input on student Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) as needed.
  • Maintain student safety and classroom order through reasonable rules and procedures.
  • Communicate standards, achievements, and improvement areas to students and families, including timely feedback.
  • Be available to students and families for education-related purposes outside instructional hours when required.
  • Plan and oversee assignments for para educators, student assistants, and volunteers, providing non-evaluative input on their performance.
  • Build relationships with administrators, colleagues, families, and the school community.
  • Appraise personal effectiveness and demonstrate continuous improvement.
  • Participate in staff meetings, district professional learning events, and committees as requested.
Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the HCPSS curriculum for the relevant grade/content range.
  • Ability to provide differentiated instruction that meets diverse student needs.
  • Skills in classroom behavior management and lesson planning.
  • Capacity to modify curriculum for special-needs students.
  • Proficiency with web-based digital tools, including Google applications, and integrating technology into instruction.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with students, families, and stakeholders.
  • Collaborative approach with administrators, colleagues, and community members.
  • Confidentiality and discretion when handling sensitive information.
Employment Information

This is a 10‑month per year teaching position within the Howard County Educators Association (HCEA) bargaining unit. Salary will follow the 10‑Month Teacher salary scale and will reflect education levels and relevant prior experience. The position is exempt from overtime under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
